I don't think so, they don't have to buy those micro bikinis and still be happy with the game. Tom Lee said it best.. "We are creating video game characters in a fantasy setting. Their actions, aesthetics and overall visual presentation is more than obviously set in a light-hearted, over-the-top, candy coated universe. The dissimilarity from REAL life women, situations and settings should be pretty apparent as soon as you start our game. And we feel most gamers in this day an age are sophisticated enough to make this distinction quite easily."
I'm inclined to agree.
While it's not fair to assume that all people who indulge in "fantasies" such as this think a certain way about real-life women, telling the difference between reality and not reality isn't really the central point. Seikon no Qwaser is
clearly not based anywhere near reality. That doesn't mean that people can't take a look at it and decide that maybe it's not for them, even though it's a "fantasy".
Yes, we all know that the core mechanics of DOA are pretty solid and you don't have to buy anything that you don't want to in terms of costumes. But, if you take a "competitive" person that isn't quite into "
IT'S LIKE I'M WEARING NOTHING AT ALL!" and all they see the devs releasing is "sexy, naughty, fetish" etc. as add-ons to the game, they are likely going to start feeling like they're not who the game was "really" meant for. They may continue to stick with the game despite that, but
since there are other fish in the sea, some people won't stick around.
Now, TN is well within their rights to just tell those people to get out of the kitchen if they can't handle the "hotness". But, it gets to be more complicated when maybe you have on one hand a fan that was on board all the way up
until things went "too far", and maybe on the other you have a fan who has
sworn never to buy anything that's not dental floss for the women or
anything at all for the men.
So, the question is how much should the "identity" of DOA bend to accommodate people who are getting sick of the fanservice. How much would the "identity" even be compromised? How many people are being kept away vs. how many people would quit if things got "classier". How many people are going to quit if things
don't get classier?
TN might be caught in the Catch-22.
