I wouldn't say FFX had a phenomenal story, it was a good story, but I wouldn't say it suddenly made up for how the world is presented.

It's kinda the opposite of FFXII in my experience. The story is very good and the characters past Vaan and Penelo was great...shame that the content inbetween is so massive it's easy to actually FORGET about the story because in comparison the content completely outshines it.

To me, FFX had a good story but a HORRID combat system(I seriously hate the battle system of FFX as it's basically EZ-Mode to the max).

Even though the FFXIII trilogy is my 2nd favorite next to FFIX, I'm not going to sugarcoat that FFXIII had an awesome story...because it didn't, but it did have characters that I cared about and unlike any other FF I played, all of them continously mattered until the end(even FFIX suffered from that as Amarant, Freya, Eiko and Steiner sadly lose relevance after awhile in different paces) and I always believed Final Fantasy as a series NEVER had good stories, but characters that always reacted RIGHT to their situations and made it authentic.

This is probably why I've gravitated way more to IX and XIII, strangely enough. The worlds drew me in but I was able to resonate with the characters because ultimately it makes sense that it would happen the way it does.

Hold up, FFXIII had very well-written dynamic characters. I remember talking about this in this thread before.

All this praise for XIII and it's sequels... o . O I must have stumbled into an alternate universe where XIII was not an overproduced, superficial yet convoluted pop opera on rails, that trashed nearly all the fan beloved conventions of the series and was the very beginning of the demise of the once greatest and most revered JRPG franchise ever. XD

Everything that's wrong with Final Fantasy XIII:

This guy does these videos for other games as well and none had to be split into 3 parts with about 30 minutes each. ;) (These are of course not real reviews and more along the lines of that video review series Chapstick likes so much.)

Sadly I do not have a favorite FF game so I am neutral with them all, or possibly just like them all with a minor few that is questionable. I'll likely pick one if FF series end (Which I doubt.) or one somewhere in the future that will blow everything out the water. (Which I also doubt.) but if you are looking for someone to praise FFXIII for it's story it won't be me, but I give the game credit because it's different than most.

I can agree well-written but can't say for "very", although I suppose everyone have different taste for this. There are also tons of dialogue in there that is rather cringeful and just not properly inserted to spark up energy or tone in the environment. Hope is a good example (FFXIII only, his future version is more improved. I like this Hope much better than the one in FFXIII). So far Fang and Sazh have been showing natural feedback, I like them in this one. This of course, is just personal taste.

Slightly off topic, on VAs I've forgotten that Liam O'Brien voiced Caius, like that is glorious. Liam always gives off that energy of pure tones that is simply astounding, especially Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. Like dear god was he so good in that. Skip to 3:23 - 6:39 (particularly 6:19 where everything just matches with the music, the mood and the tone is simply great) @SilverForte @Chapstick (ignore those random subs that's down there. Listen to Liam's voice of epic bone-chilling doom.)

Caius did her Aerith-style

I liked that it showed these characters dealing with loss in different ways reacting as real people would and growing as characters. While Hope was annoying in the beginning I still think he's a good character. He lost his mom, flipped the fuck out like anyone would, and attached to Lightning as a replacement (this is part of why I find the Light/Hope shippers weird, he essentially looks at her as a big sister/mom). He finally confronted Snow and came to peace with his mother's death. He learned to stand on his own two feet and even became the most positive one in the group lifting others up when they felt down. Then he grew up to become the head of a research thing or whatever in XIII-2.

I'd watch these but I don't want spoilers. Also that would be an hour and a half so yeah... Anyway ive actually really enjoyed ff13 but maybe that's from the perspective of it being pretty much my first game in the series. So I don't really know much about changes in this game with story and gameplay besides what I said about it being linear and having no towns.

When did some of you get into the series?

When i was 5-6 year old i used to watch my uncle playing FFVIII, after that i started playing it too and bought FFVII and IX for the PS1. It was kind weird playing FFVII as it was in english and i didn't understand anything of what was happening, i began learning with this though xD

Watched my brother play FFVII and I was enamored with the world completely and utterly from the word go.

FFVIII...let's not talk about that.

But FFIX showed me what a real fantasy is and it's been my favorite ever since(helps I played it myself rather than watch someone else)

VII was my first. Ironically I never actually finished it until about two years ago though. My opinion is less favourable though haha

I was thinking of playing through it now that its been added to the ps4 store. Also almost everyone says its the best game in the series. Whats your opinion on it?

I actually stopped playing 13 when I got to half way point because all the friction between the characters was gone along with my interest in progressing.

Had the sequals never been made I probably would have beaten it, but knowing that the story just goes on minus my favorite characters just made me not want to bother.

Not very favourable, I notice most that call VII the best FF have either only played the PS1 games or grew up with VII.

When I played it I could see nothing much else than its flaws, like for example the story is dull as hell nothing much actually happens after you exit Midgar and there's too much that the game doesn't tell you at all I got lost several times just to find out I had to go somewhere I had already been to or go to a place that doesn't seem like it would progress the story at all.

The "perfect" battle system is flawed to hell and back as well since you can just mad attack and win for about 70% of the game.

Basically in short:

- Materia system is good but over shadowed by how broken Cloud is most of the time.
- Tifa and Yuffie are most likable characters by far
- The areas can be pretty awesome but Midhar is the only area that really fits VIIs theme imo
- OST is the best one in the series
- doesn't really aid you in where to go next most of the time unless a character flat out says where to go it can get pretty confusing.
- too many mini games
- underwhelming bosses and story

The first one I played was Final Fantasy IV second one I played was FFVI. I was young and one of those kids in the past that would just skip all the dialogue and go straight into battle because of all those battle animations that were cool at the time on the 1st playthrough. (When you look at it now in the SNES, does not look so much.) somewhere down the line I replayed it to try and actually understand the story, In fact FFIV was one of the games that even helped me develop some English reading within the 1st grade, can't remember exact time but I definitely remember a teacher asking me on where did I learn such big words with me saying "FF4 son!" to which she looked at me like I was crazy. Cool times.

FF wasn't my top games but it was definitely the ones I most played. I mean, it was role playing. There wasn't really much back then besides this and Chrono Trigger etc.

Whether you choose to believe it or not, there is no doubt that it is one of the best. This is your personal opinion of course and there is nothing wrong with that, but the game was the pinnacle of game changing. There are stuff in the game that makes me cringe but it's pros outweight the cons which is difficult to hate on the game, even I can't hate on it. I can see why over 80% of the FF population likes this game.

- True, although everyone can be broken in the game. Knights of the Rounds and Mime yo.
- Neutral with the entire cast, they were all pretty good. (except perhaps Cloud, the character is cringeful at times.)
- It can't be a FF if they were stuck on one location for the entire game, it would lose points for that. Once they reached out of Midgar for the first time I felt that was a really good part because the characters were there during the Shinra building incident for quite some time.
- Ah this is the music so I can't say anything on this, music on ears is different for everyone and opinion. Soundtrack was cool.
- Well to be fair, the game shoots up like an arrow on where to go. You can't exactly backtrack to most places yet so you have to go forward regardless, one of the few games where you become social and talk with towns people that doesn't trigger a scene by hitting a certain area most of the time. Game can't be that easy now.
- Most of it is within the Gold Saucer, I don't particularly see mini-games taking over FFVII. The only time you'll see mini-game spam is if you are aiming for GP to get BP in the battle arena. (Which is completely optional.)
- Now this is your personal opinion and one of the rarest to say that the story is underwhelming. You don't hear stuff like that but I have to admit that FFVII story was good, surprised you didn't like it. Mama's boy Sephiroth, Jenova and Hojo were pretty good.
