Depends on your play style. But in my experience, when Ayane and Ryu are pitted against each other, the Ayane player wants to stay up close/mid range, and the Ryu player wants to get the advantage of distance.
Ayane excels at darting, whereas Ryu is the master of long-range intercepts.
I think Ayane creates the illusion of intended distance, but that screws with the opponent when she just as quickly closes the gap to strike properly, whereas Hayabusa is (apparently; I never use him) best kept at that distance.
