Interview with Yosuke Hayashi

Just tweeted TN about the holds issue. I'm new to competitive DoA, coming from VF. It looks like alot of fun, and the SummerJam stream is pretty hype so far. This game looks really good, but I don't wanna end up hating the game (competitvely) over some n00bout hold mashing bs

Here's the thing..
in most scenarios right now its 4 hits to burst, where burst is the 4th.
you get your 3 chances ..however with some characters you can reduce those chances to 2.
for example Brad can do a sitdown stun into another sitdown into burst... that already guaranteed it (yes slow escaping helps but how often?)
For the most part other characters function with 1 sitdown in those 4 hits reducing the guess chances ...
Yes, but Emperor it's not 3 chances, the CB itself is the 4th chance, especially if there's no unholdable stun involved and for a few of those characters it doesn't involve an unholdable stun because some character are lacking in that department and have to rely on VERY predictable sitdowns etc that will be countered or dodged easily unfortunately...

I was deliberately going for the CB (Eliot, Kasumi, Hayate) and it is pointless for them to work for it. Jann Lee can get away with it being 4 hits because his moves causes deep stuns and with him being quick with it, him Cb'ing people comes quick.

I tried it with Tina, and its not that effective. I can get it with :7::P::P:::P::, but its so slow and obvious. Cb's comming in less hits would be very benificial to the game. 2 to 3 hit max.

I didn't find the movie disappointing at all. My only disappointment with it was that Lei Fang got exactly one line of marginal mention in it altogether. It had more story and personality than the Tekken movie, by far.

If you lower your expectations there is some lols to be had.

Video game movies are rarely to be approached with high expectations, much like comicbook movies. In the DoA movie it was mostly the visuals really. And it had a story that clicked, even if it was far too simple.

Hayashi took a moment to explain that the Alpha demo was aimed at a more casual audience that had just picked up Ninja Gaiden,
It's really sad that they were aiming Ninja Gaiden at the "casual crowd."
If any franchise in gaming history should NOT be aimed at the casual crowd, it should be Ninja Gaiden.

Anyway, interesting interview for the most part. Shimbori favoring Lei Fang is no surprise to me.

He was saying the Alpha demo was aimed at those with a casual interest in DOA, as they had purchased Ninja Gaiden. It wasn't a comment on who NG3 was aimed at.

Did you ever get the chance to send your follow up email explaining the community's issues with hold's and CB?

I decided to leave it be as I saw through the subsequent tournaments many reliable voices from strong tournament players would be heard.

If you've played NG3, it should be clear that the focus was on the "common" crowd. In other words, it was trying to be God of War, rather than appealing to the "hardcore/non-casual" players Ninja Gaiden is usually aimed at.

It would make since to group casual appeal game demos with casual-game appeals and hardcore game demos with hardcore games, wouldn't you agree?

I've played and completed NG3. You can infer who its audience is and you may be right, I'm just making clear what Hayashi was commenting on was the DOA demo, not NG3.
