Nioh 3 Announced

It’s hard to be excited when DOA as a fighter has been MIA for so long, but Nioh 3 was officially announced at Sony’s State of Play after being leaked several years ago by what appeared to be an official source. There are no more leaked titles moving forward from that source other than a cancelled DOA project.

I’m sure N3 will be great (infact there is an Alpha Demo available for a short time on PS5), but DOA not being present is kind of bothersome to me at this point and hopefully we get something soon, even if it is outsourced to another company.

Well I like how it's already been announced for PC too. And maybe one day I'll actually have the right rig to try out these games... :rig:

And yeah my first thought when I saw this announcement was, sadly, what does this mean for DOA's chances? Idgas, it better be announced before the end of this year anyways, lol.

I really don't think a game like DOA can be entirely outsourced though (at least not a NEW game, but MAYBE a remaster/remake/collection). What indie/smaller developer has the experience to be trusted with being handed a prominent 3D fighting game IP, really? lol. Even giving it to Platinum, maybe after NG4, would a hard sell (but if it's gonna be "outsourced", even partially, that's the most logical way I can imagine it happening).

Nioh aside and slightly off topic, I'm still not sure why people expect DOA this year. Sure it's been a hot while, but greenlighting a DOA from what I hear (including from Matt himself) is that it's always a hassle, which I also think it's true given that fighting games is a lion's den for relevancy compared to most genres. TN has to 'really' sit down for that one, and you'd have to catch KT on an off day that isn't ignoring it.

People actually thought DOA was going to be at Sony's state of play? like what? how? why would anyone even think that? that's not on my bingo card either lol. Tokyo Game Show is way more believable and is typically DOA's candidate which is not even a guaranteed this year or the next for DOA to be there.

Well, I didn't actually expect anything new from Team Ninja at this SoP at all, lol. Maybe a new NG4 video or something. Nioh 3 was a surprise out of nowhere, and it seems most people reacted that way... especially since they made it seem like Nioh was on a break for a while, which opened up the possibility for DOA and NG, and since NG is partly being worked on by PG...

And I wouldn't expect a new DOA so soon if it wasn't for multiple factors (which have already been said multiple times but I'll say them again) - they call this year The Year of the Ninja and it's also the 30th anniversary of Team Ninja with DOA's 30th anniversary being next year and TN has said they want to do something to commemorate the 30th year since the creation of Team Ninja. Hell, maybe that could mean a collection or remasters or something, but with all that set up, if nothing comes of it I'm not gonna help but feel disappointed. TN did say there were multiple major projects this year, right? So far that's panning out pretty well...

Tokyo Game Show seems like the perfect opportunity. Of course there are no guarantees, just increased expectations. You can't tell me it'd be ok for them to blast through both the 30th anniversary of TN and DOA without doing anything for their first major game series that saved them from bankruptcy.

Maybe they could collab with Sega like they're doing with PG for NG4. Maybe with the VF Legacy team.

Nioh 3 was a weird one since they mentioned themselves that the Nioh story was done and that they would use the Nioh system for any future games (which they did, Strangers of Paradise). I like Nioh but even I agree that it was.......weird they brought that back. Thought it was over personally.

If anything I somewhat always knew they would use the Nioh system for the future for any games they have planned, but to be another Nioh entirely was a little strange yeah. It's just that taking a break from Nioh or even after NG4 doesn't automatically mean that DOA is being worked on. Stuff like that has to be greenlit regardless of anniversaries. DOA lost Shimbori who was the only guy realistically pushing for the series, and yet somehow some people still think "When's DOA news?" like it just doesn't make sense in my opinion lol.

Personally I took the ninja part as literal meaning Ninja Gaiden itself. While DOA has ninjas within the game, I didn't put the two together in the same category (but maybe it should I guess.) If TN made a "The Year of the Fighting Games" in like two years then that's probably more believable for DOA to be within that category and makes it more reasonable for anybody to keep DOA expectations there.

Tokyo Game Show seems like the perfect opportunity. Of course there are no guarantees, just increased expectations. Out of all the gaming events Tokyo Gameshow has always been the best one to showcase DOA related media. Artwork stands, pictures, booths. It was always in the best assumption that if it's not TGS, then DOA is very likely not there and that any other events or sneak previews was typically out of sheer luck or miracle (EVO, etc.)

It's more that I haven't seen any big clues for high expectation when it comes to DOA. I'm passionate for DOA as well with how much DOA supported me at events for years, but it just makes sense to keep expectations to a medium/low with how things going on right now with 3D fighters and how many action games TN is producing or outsourcing.

Ex: Someone on twitter asked "Marvel is there, and it's a fighting game. Why is DOA not there?" Like, why would it be there? Marvel is a global giant. It just doesn't make sense to fill the gap there is what I mean, on top that it's State of Play of all news.

Well at least we know VF6 is coming to save the 3D FG landscape... I just hope it inspires KT/TN to try again with DOA. The series has been counted out before, as we all know, and it came back big time, it can do it again. Thankfully VF6 will make sure the genre isn't dead and still viable. I can try to ignore the key moment we're in and keep expectations low, but the disappointment of them missing a great opportunity will be unavoidable, but it's still better if it comes later than never, of course.

Honestly if DOA did this, probably would of seen DOA related stuff a while ago now without having to rely on KT since Sega is pushing stuff to promoting now. Unfortunately people think outsourcing = automatically bad so who knows since it has a weird negative connotation recently here (for both good and bad reasons really). It's either a hit or a miss including in-house.

NG3 and NG3:RE was done in-house and that game was mid-low at best, so because it was mid, they practically went "yeah I rather let someone else do this". It's an example that not everything in-house is all sunshine and rainbows of success.

While it's not what I prefer, I wouldn't automatically hate the idea of outsourcing, it's just that it's hard to think of who they could legitimately outsource to... at least not without having to worry. I mean, personally I wouldn't have preferred them to go with the devs of Blasphemous for a new 2D NG, but it is what it is and at least it makes sense, so hopefully it turns out great. But I much prefer how TN and PG are collabing for NG4.
