Tengu had no ideal range, plan of approach or good pokes in 4. He had 8K in 2 but that was a whole different story, and judging by the frame data Nyotengu will not have that.

Nyotengu has tools that Tengu didn't, not to mention that the whole mechanics and feel of the game are different in 5 than they were back in DOA4. I don't use the same strategies with Hayabusa in 4 that I do in 5, and I certainly wouldn't expect my gameplan with DOA4 Tengu to be compatible with Nyotengu in 5U.

Others can feel free to comment with on their experiences with past Tengu if they wish (probably out of mere boredom waiting for Nyotengu to drop), but personally, I'm not going to be riding on anyone's predictions for this character gameplay-wise. Historically people's predictions of new characters' gameplay in 5U has been rather poor prior to their release, and I don't suspect any different here.

I see no benefit in trying to compare a character none of us have ever played to a character in a totally different game who happened to be one of the worst characters in any fighting game ever. I'm just going to wait until she comes out and take it from there.

Well in DOA4, he did have P+K as a poke. It was i12 and had a good stun, but was unsafe. 2PP was decent as well, as it was an i15 low followed by an i16 low that could be delayed. Both hits crushed highs and the second hit caused a good stun.

That's pretty much it though.

8K. An i12 high that crushed highs, launched on NH (extremely high launch height too), and was +3 on block.

His 7K was also i14 then and sent him backwards as far as his 7P does.

3P was 4 frames slower then, but caused a refloat in juggles.

His throws did massive damage in that game as well, and his divebomb did 50 damage, making it awesome against WU kicks.

Of course, he has more shit too, but I don't expect Nyotengu to take much from DOA2 Tengu, so there really isn't much of a point in bringing up that incarnation of him. She seems to be based on Tengu's DOAD incarnation (which is to be expected) and improved upon from there.

One of these days i'm going to have to write a Tengu 2U guide. It'll be remarkably short though.

In that game I personally favored a style of using his incredible potential for defense as his offense.

Sure people like to talk about the silliness that was 8K. But that 7K, that was the real game breaker if you knew why.

7K was as fast and as forlorn said took you as far back as 7P. However more importantly the animation was almost identical as was the audio cue. This means that in any situation you can escape your opponents range and then whiff punish, or not. you could back flip then run up into that amazing grab damage. Mixing 7K and 7P enough to confuse your opponent only once makes them question which is which for the rest of the match. At that point, they belong to you.

I called this the Firestorm Defense.

And I miss it dearly.

Found a video for reference. Not my best work of that era, however keep in mind that this match is match 19 of a first to 10 endurance match that lasted nearly 3 hours. Stick around till the end to see what people mean about Tengu's reality shattering grab damage.

I feel like I should point out that 4K and F+K both have good reach and damage, and are both safe on block. F+K being a launcher on counter-hit is also really nice.

But yeah, you could more or less win matches using only 8K and 7K (and the occasional 90-100 damage throws if you felt like it).

Okay, thanks for the replies. I just wanted to know what the general approach would be with this character and what she's particularly good at.

Looking at her general list of crushes and Guard Breaks, she has some fairly good stuff for mid to long range poking, but still, there's not much to give a clear picture.

So far, her most obvious crushing moves are:
:6::P::+::K:
:6::K:
:2::P::P:
:2::h::+::K:

Crushes I can't confirm are:

:8::K:
:3::P: (it seemed on few occasions on streams that it actually crushed highs)

Please make some input if you have any. Having a good general idea of what's what when this character comes out would be beneficial.

:6::K: was a poor crush in DOA2, probably because of how huge Tengu was. It might be better now with Nyotengu's new model, I dunno.

Unless they've changed it, :2::H+K: actually isn't a crush; You're in a standing state while doing it, not crouching, so people can just jab you out of it.

Yeah, that. Plus 6P+K didn't crush before either (not that I'm aware of anyway, since I never used it due to it being utter trash) and neither did 3P. I doubt that either of them will suddenly crush in 5U.

Ice cream. And I too am confused about 2T not going over the ledge (especially since her trailer shows it being utilized on Lorelei's edge).

Oh, yeah. I forgot about the Lorelei event in her debut trailer. So it does go over edges, but maybe not Lost World? That would be dumb. I'm hoping she was just out of range.

And are you fucking serious? She's holding ice cream?

Honestly, I wouldn't be too worried about it. As a religious Hayabusa player who worships cliff izunas and has literally experimented with them for hours in training mode and toyed with baiting them endlessly in countless matches, I can say that cliff throws are not the most reliable thing in this game and can be very sensitive to exact placement (unlike DOA3 where cliff throws basically seemed to work like magnets, sucking you over to do the cool, badass stuff constantly).

My guess is that she just had to align it a bit better.

DOA3 was like that with everything, lol. Seriously. Go boot it up and do Leon's 4T while next to a wall, but facing away from it at a 90 degree angle. It's crazy.

But yeah. I'm hoping and assuming that you're right.
