Why not? Animating them well both requires a shitload of time and effort nowadays and they both have 3d environments, although games with 2.5 d the backgrounds are quite rudimentary.
The beauty of DOA is the accessibility of things : mechanics, characters and the lore.
It's a patchwork of popular philosophies and inspirations which have nothing to do which either others, but create something likable (ninjas & cowboys, science & kung fu, dinosaurs and bikinis, Metal Gear Solid & Uncharted...)
Speaking of that, DOA could totally welcome a pirate, a robot, a wizard, a zombie, a samurai, a ghost, a killer plant, a spy, a time-traveler, a werewolf, a fairy, a furry cat, a viking, a thief, an Inca, an astronaut...
Now that the gameplay is more solid than ever, they should focus on that creativity more. More culture, better designs (for costumes, stages, musics and dialogues).
