The fire emblem characters aren't "who's". More so a "if you played this series you know who they are" kind of thing like some of the n64 cast was.
That still puts them as "who's" because that's niche.

Compared to the "everyone knows who they are" additions like pacman and megaman and whatnot.

Fire Emblem is pretty damn popular. Not niche at all. I imagine that very few people were confused about who Lucina and Robin were in that reveal. I don't even play Fire Emblem and I knew who they were.

Prior to Melee I would agree that FE was niche, extremely niche because a small number of games were in released outside Japan. Roy and Marth were introduced and suddenly everybody wanted to know more about Fire Emblem, the series has gotten much larger over the past couple of years, especially with Marth's title (the first FE game) finally released in a language other than Japanese.

At this point for Nintendo if it is a character with a sword and an older style of clothing/armor and is not Legend of Zelda related they are assumed to be from Fire Emblem games.

Edit: Right now DOA/Tekken/Soul Calibur is more niche than Fire Emblem.

Okay, I'm bumping this thread back up for a reason.

So, I know you guys heard about the leaks in Smash 3DS, and probably seen the videos on YouTube (even though Nintendo has taken them down.)

Yes, you guys pretty much seen Bowser Jr., Shulk, and Ganondorf. (Thank god for gifs)

I'm guessing that's not Shulk as in "short for She-Hulk"

Nah, Shulk as in the guy from Xenoblade Chronicles.
It feels eierd to are so many jrpg characters popping up.

Not so much for the "who?" Factor, but because the roster is becoming decidedly less cartoony mascots. Its like when kingdom hearts stopped focusing on the Disney characters. I'm left going "wait, wasn't that the whole point?"

Japanese company making a fighting game. Seems to fit to me.

If the Mii Fighter is an indication of anything, the game emphasizes that fighters are divided into brawlers, gunners (aka projectile spammers), and swordfighters (although there are some obvious overlaps). I guess to balance the 3 categories they wanted to include a lot more swordfighters in this game and since JRPG characters are so heavily requested that's the best opportunity to add them I guess. Let's not forget people: Smash 3DS comes out in Japan on September 13. Some guys that own a Japanese 3DS could find ways to upload videos to YouTube.

I actually missed the videos, sadly, but from what I heard, Ganondorf pretty much looks the same as he was in Brawl. Being someone who mains Ganondorf, I am not happy about this at all.

As someone who mains Ganondorf/Falcon myself, I'm also pretty disappointed. Would've preferred a sword or something along those lines (his Hyrule Warriors appearance and fighting style would've been amazing, but I understand that Smash was in development long before that was announced, so I certainly wasn't expecting it). Or better yet, they could've brought in some fresh Zelda villain blood by replacing him with Demise. I just wish they would've done SOMETHING different.

Where's the Mii fighter?

I was wondering that too, but I just assumed that you had to select it through some alternate method.

you have to select it in some custom menu

Yeah, like that.

Sakurai has always made there be at least one character that has to be selected through some nonconventional method ever since Melee.

To be clear, I didn't want his moveset changed (other than Warlock Punch and his awful utilt). I wanted him to essentially retain his moveset, but also get buffed in the process, so he'd actually be viable.
