The Art Style and Graphics Discussion

Oh, I wanted to bring up Blue Reflection, but just kinda never got around to it. From what I've gathered, it's essentially Persona with magical girls and the artist from Atelier's Arland trilogy.

We are usually only talking about the really pretty games in here, how about we take a look at the PS4's ugliest game today? Quite entertaining. :D

Lol, I was made aware that it actually can be way, waaay uglier on PS4. XD

You don't know what youre talking about, that's clearly the most breath taking experience on the system... I mean look at those top of the line models and textures. FFXV eat your heart out.

The amazing art of Horizon Zero dawn gets an art book:

It's already finished and printed and begging to be shipped out...just not before release of the game. :(

Here a new video talking about the environments and the day and night and weather system of the game:

Wow, Just Wow...! This game is looking unbelievably breathtaking! Really cool to see it having an art book produced with it to allow fans to appreciate the outstanding art direction. Really can't wait for this game to release now! Good stuff Guerrilla!

For Honor map variation trailer:

Looks technically as well as artistically absolutely stunning. And these are huge maps, with hundreds of enemies at the same time and it is running in 60fps even on consoles.

Just image a new Soul Calibur could have these amazing looking stages in smaller scale... *drool*

You already know! Plus they've shown they can handle renderng it all in their own engine too in SC5, bonus points right there!!!

So I was bored and making collages earlier so I decided that since I already did face comparison, why not hair? I did all characters who had past shoulder hair and I once again used camera shot for better aesthetic. Also I tried my best to match the poses of the DOA4 game, so for the most part they should all look virtually identical.

Her loose hair in DOA5 was both shortened and thinned drastically. Although her DOA5 hair has better physics, her original hair was much longer and fuller and had a more beautiful drape when it was behind her back or when she was say crouching. Overall a downgrade imo.

Her high ponytail was buffed significantly tho, they made it more detailed, gave her a more logically tied ribbon and made the physic and animation more dynamic and beautiful, although I dislike the shortened ribbon.

Her low ponytail was better in DOA4: It was thick, had an attractive drape and was longer. In DOA5 it looks like they were gonna give her a ponytail, but instead pulled the hairs of her trashy loose hair model to the side of her head, lowered it over her shoulder and then sealed it with a ribbon...I hate side ponytails mostly so it was a definite downgrade. It's also highly illogical how suddenly her hair loses all the length and thickness from her regular high ponytail into this thin, horrid trashy excuse of a hairstyle. Hate it -_-

Braid was better before, it was longer and the animation was better imo than her short DOA5 one that looks like they pulled her hair in a low ponytail, snipped 2-3 inches off and then braided it. The ribbons are cuter tho and more solid looking.

They lengthened his hair in DOA5 but still took away a lot of the sheen and volume he had in DOA4. The physics are somewhat better, but I overall still preferred the DOA4 one.

Fotor_148564693254232.jpg
Shortened and thinned although it's better executed than say Kasumi. I don't really mind the change, the thickness they should've kept.

Fotor_148564723385812.jpg
His ponytail was simply shortened but in terms of appearance and physics it's superior. His bangs were fucked up in DOA5 tho.

Fotor_148564812788819.jpg
Hitomi has always had one of the best loose hair models imo, it was the perfect length and well assembled and optimized for her character model. I don't mind the shortening but they thinned her hair too drastically, it's practically one thin, albeit attractive layer of hair.

Fotor_14856488935494.jpg
I'm really happy they shortened it and pushed some hair behind her ears, her loose hair in DOA4 was one of the worst: it was a poorly optimized clipping disaster and it didn't seem like they even tried to giver her hair proper hit detection like the others, but it's probably because she doesn't have a hime cut like Kasumi so her sidelocks are constantly over her shoulder and look horrendous, like she has too much hair than she can handle. I'm glad they pushed back the sidelocks behind her ears but they did go a bit overboard with the virtual cutting scissors...

Fotor_148564867185790.jpg
Although the conversion turned her flowy long ponytail into a sausage in spades, I'm actually happy they shortened it, it was too long imo. They could've made it shorter tho, you can't see in that shot but in DOA5LR in certain win poses the ponytail clips right into her butt. 0_o

Fotor_148564836157567.jpg
From what I can see, they left his hair pretty much untouched, they just ported the assets in and made it fit the game engine like how a modder ports hair and clothes from other games into DOA5LR.

Don't judge me >.> I was just bored and figured why not make a comparison collage since I love making them

You leave my mom alone :p
I didn't say anything negative XD It's true tho, her butt is so big her ponytail magically clips through it 0_o

And remind me to never play DOA4 again, I just got reminded why I used to hate Ayane so much when I did an arcade run...~_~

There's nothing wrong with a queen's figure. Just out of spite, I hope they make Helena's hair long again :p lol

@KasumiLover69, that is actually a very cool contribution to this thread. Thanks for all the work you put into it. :)

I have to disagree about Genfu though...

They didn't just import the hair assets. Even in these image quality-wise not so great pics you can tell the texturing and modelling is different.
In DOA5 the braid is thicker and has differently arranged braid segments, the ribbons are different as well and the tassle has a different shape too. Just stylistically they kept the look very close but otherwise it was modelled and textured anew.
Most Interesting to note though is that DOA4 had actual fur rendering and DOA5 has not, just a pretty low resolution texture instead. :(

I see now, sorry I thought the braid patterns were the same XD And yeah the fur in DOA5 is much worse in presentation it almost half finished while DOA4 gave it a convincing and even almost "alive" look. And sorry about the pics, I was originally gonna ss on ps4 but then I realized the better quality could probably make comparing less accurate so I opted for similar shots plus I liked the aesthetic a bit(Since I play a lot of fighting games that are still in arcades like Tekken, I've grown to tolerate and even like the camera phone screenshots we've gotten over the years.)

Lol, you don't have to aplogize. ;D
Some do actually really like the scanline look of off-screen photos. On Neogaf there is a whole thread dedicated to those. You'd feel right at home there. ;)

Not gonna lie, the game does look gorgeous. Shame its boring as fuck, and would have been better off without the Resident Evil name attached, but still.

I love the little details like the black wrapping on the kitchen walls, that gives the place a lot of personality.

Some PS4 Pro images I took in the Leville in Lestallum. The overal style and lighting is done so well here:

As you see in some of the pics, even on the Pro, in 1800p resolution, the hair dithering is still pretty noticable. So unfortunate, because apart from this issue the game looks so good. :/

@DestructionBomb, nice pics. Is it the PC version?
