I can't speak for every individual, but based on what I observed, most people just want an identity in the community through a new - or upcoming - character when they feel it was "taken" from them with previous characters. The problem is, these very people don't want to put the time into the character to earn the right to stand out with that identity. They expect instant results, and as a result, they lose their way, repeating the same cycle.

And then you have those who simply don't care for having a main character and just want to have fun with the cast.

Regardless on who x character is for DLC, there will always be bandwagon players that want to try out the new toy until they get bored because it's the hot new thing and then maybe a small fraction of those players may legitimately main x character. This is assuming that x character doesn't end up top tier because then players are more likely to stick with x character just for the easier wins.

And then there's the other problem, where hopping on a bandwagon is a fundamentally terrible idea for trying to establish a unique identity, lol.

The worst part about it that I liked her look before she took off the mask...
Now unfortunately, I'm gonna be a bandwagoner regardless...

Phase 4 will come to home consoles now and Nyo Tengu will go the the arcades. In about 3-4 months Nyo Tengu will come to the home consoles and a new character, that hasn't been announced yet, will go to the arcades. It's always the same system.
