What you are and what you want to be.....

So I do better with Grapplers than with any other type of character or play Style.... But heres the the thing.... Thats not my desired playstyle. I actually want to be more of an Zoning and Evasive type of player and use characters built around that style.... but I'm just better at grappling for some reason.

Am I the only one ? Do you guys also have some sort of play style conflict ?

I want to play opportunistic characters. Sadly, I'm garbage so I can't execute any of them to a decent level.

I don't think Phase 4 players are oppertunistic.... I think alot of what they do is planned.... its something I discovered while writing Up Sarah's Slide Guide.... the purpose of every move in that stance is to bait out the Low Punch.

I don't do well with characters that intend for you to be hitting buttons all the damn time. It feels unnatural and silly to me (Zack, Leifang, etc.).

I do better with characters who are forced to play more defensively, with deep stuns and heavy throws. But those are the characters I like better anyway (for the most part), so aside from MU woes I guess it isn't too bad.

I would like to play more offensively, but I'm not very comfortable doing rushdowns. With Kasumi, I play her quite similar to how she plays in DOA2: defensive. The rushdowns thing is just not really my thing...I prefer to bait and wait for the opponent to open themselves up, and I do well playing that way surprisingly. If you've seen that Phase 4 vs Ayane video I posted today, I play very evasive like, but that's not the style I want to use forever.

I'm a bad comboist, so I break em down and mix-match my own.

That's why my most comfy characters are Mila, Christie, Gen Fu, and Jacky. Jacky is one character that can crumple the fk out of enemy and keep them standing for more with minimum move and recovery in between. EDIT: Unless he randomly taunts and lose momentum over it...

I often get called a player who zones a lot, especially if I play Rig or Momiji. I don't really play all too well in close combat so I would like to be a player who is able to do that effectively, I suppose.

Well... you can learn by fire by using a character that can't zone and is much better at close range.... normally these would be grapplers but they are kinda slow.... I think Helena is a character thats much better when shes in your face.... or Mila since she benefits more from Knock Downs.... some times I "Camp Wake Up Kicks" when I play as her because both her Low and Mid Kick Holds lead into her mounts which reset the knock down.

This is also one of the reasons why I play Honoka. You are forced to play in close combat, since her range is awful. Same goes for Helena indeed.

Most of the characters I use are strike based, stun-launch heavy characters. But most of my damage in matches often come from throw punishment and holds. Many times, I've been told that I should look at characters like Bayman or Leon, because it would benefit me more. And while I did dabble with Bayman and Leon for a bit, and found them quite fun, they just didn't hold my attention enough to where I'd actually sit down and practice with them in order to utilize them properly. The beauty of 3D fighters is that you can play a character how ever you want to fit your play style. Do you know how many confused looks I get when I tell people I play Brad Wong rush down style? Lol

I don't really know. I just pick characters who look good and then learn them. My Helena (who is my main) playstyle consists of resets (both in throws and force techs). Simply because this works the best for me and I think this character is really good at it.

When I play a character like Nyotengu I go a lot more for counter hits, but I have noticed that I try a lot of force techs with her as well, haha. I think you should always play in a way that works for you and add your characters strengths to that.

I'm currently working on that now.... kinda the same way you are.... I'm using characters as my playstyle.... eventually I'l just have multiple universal playstyles for all the characters I play.

Same for me. This is why I do zoning, baiting, and defensive play with grapplers. Just more my style.

Also, this.

I'm a very aggressive player, which is why I play Akira. Likes to get in the shit.
However, sometimes I wish I could play a more defensive character. Make my opponent afraid of making any moves.
