Xbox-One Revealed

Microsoft is sticking by its guns.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/06/microsoft-details-xbox-one-used-games-always-online

Here are the key take aways.

  • The system will have to check the games once every 24 hours - if it doesn't get that check in on your home console you're relegated to DVD's and BluRays.
  • They still haven't fully explained how trade- ins will work, except to say that developers will have control over what can and can't be resold.
  • Kinect is only listening for the phrase "Xbox On". Its not a spy camera sitting in your living room.

Ok so heres why Xbox One is destined to fail.

I, currently, work in the apartment industry. Out of the 288 units on my property I can say that 70% of the people here have a current generation console. Out of those 70%. . .less than 20% have broadband internet access in their homes. Most of them use their smart phones for web browsing now (Which, I'd wager, is mostly centered around Facebook, Twitter, ESPN and what have you.)

The Xbox One is going to fail - people in lower income situations cannot afford broadband and most that I talk to don't even care to have it!

Shit, if it wasn't for Xbox Live I probably wouldn't even have broadband and if I ever chose to not have live anymore then I'll still be able to play the system - out goes the modem, in goes an extra $75 a month and the next stop is the new game section at walmart.

But with an Xbox One this isn't an option? Ok, well I'll stick with the 360 and buy a PS4.

And if Sony tries to pull the same thing then fuck it all - I'm not even a big gamer anymore.

“With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.”

At least it consistently allows you to watch TV.

Since the new Xbox will have HDMI-In one probably can plug PS4 in and continue to play games.

Still doesn't answer a lot of questions? 24 hour verification checks? Are publishers asking for a cut in used retail sales and will this effect prices of used titles? What about Red-box and Netflix?

We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.

Since when have we needed to be enabled by publishers to trade our games? What about pawn shops and smaller local retailers that trade used games?

  • Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

Game over is the biggest fanboy....but he always has been so it's whatever.

I'd call myself a Sony fan. They consistently give me bang for my buck, so I show support similar to how anyone would who "picks a favorite" in a field of competition (ex: WWE, UFC, NFL, etc).

That being said, I'm NOTHING compared to how some ravenous sports fans can get. But hey, if anyone finds my posts here to be ridiculous in any way, they can feel free to ignore me. They would be entirely in their rights to do so.

I'm just saying that I've been watching you post for the better part of 5 years and even back in the day when sony was droping the ball you were trying to justify some of the bs.

You can support an organization and still do it in an objective way. . .

It would be like saying that "WWE is better than TNA" without really watching what TNA is doing on a week to week basis and basing your opinion solely on hearsay and the quality of the content of what you're watching (For the record, I watch both, and TNA Impact is usually the better show.)

But I think we can all agree that Xbox One is heading for an ice berg - and Kate Winslet already fucked Dicaprio. . .

Perhaps. I can admit I'm guilty of favoritism from time to time. I certainly can be in regards to WWE.

But hey, isn't everyone guilty of favoritism about SOMETHING, though? I mean, it seems to me to be human nature a bit. It is RIDICULOUSLY hard to be 100% objective about everything all the time. Y'know?

I seen all the points they made all I'm seeing is ONLINE, ONLINE, ONLINE, ONLINE
someone covered this already in this thread but it needs to be said again still til this day not everyone has internet. Not every friend will have internet you cant just simply use your friends cloud when the person has NO INTERNET. Vacation and gaming is out the picture you gotta have online to access your games still. Not every vacationing spot is fun 24/7 and sometimes there is no online I do like to play some games.

And finally this:
Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

Cool story no shit they are beating around the bush with this one of course there is no fee for "trading-in" no one was worried about that. Doesn't change the fact there is a fine for playing used though.

The "trade-in" fee will be built in the price of a used game sell if the publishers are asking game-stop and Amazon for a cut of every used title sold. And what about used games from non major retailers or the Jones's garage sell down the street? What about us game-fly or red-box users?

I've been watching this thread like a Hawk, so I seen someones post about that already. I own a 360 which is why I been watching this thread. I wouldn't doubt it if it was your post that I saw about that % cut. I believe the cut was 10%?/ 25%? Whatever it was its enough for retailers go under that thrive off of used. Also about renters/ retailers I already said my goodbyes to Gamestop and Gamefly in this thread. No more game stores if this takes off the only store to buy games would be Amazon only.

In retrospect online passes are a good idea and I'd prefer that over what MS seems to be cooking.

I agree.

I'm not buying an X0- I will not support shutting down the used game market. If developers want people to keep their games then they need to make better games.

I don't like this post one bit your placing blame on Devs as if they got a choice. All the evidence points towards publishers not developers. Developers use to be gamers at one point therefore share the same passion as we do towards gaming. They do want to screw us over they do have our best interest its the publishers that don't give a shit. You just need marketing experience to be a publisher.

Look at Bobby Kotick hes not a gamer his background is a business Exec. But yet the guy has the biggest franchise under his belt and that was not created through his genius. It was created by two guys and a team who a lot left after MW2. Look at Ken Inafune (the mega man guy) developer not publisher. He went high up the Capcom ladder, but yet later left to make his own company. Then later released a statement "regarding the current state of gaming in JP only" but honestly this is true worldwide. I'll paraphrase him "JP gaming lost its creativity it once had. I wanna make original imaginative titles." something along those lines. Point being despite making good money the guy is in it for gaming not selling copies. I could give more examples but I believe this is good enough.

In today's game there is no make one bad game and redeem yourself. Its one strike your out unless you made a game that made quite a bit of money where you can fuck up once. Capcom sells 5 million copies its a loss. Turn 10 fucked up with Horizon, but made good games like Forza1-4, so there still in the game. A company like Bizzare creations though. The company that made Geometry Wars. They went under cause they were forced to make a bond game by Activision and no one gives a shit about bond anymore. It doesn't help Activision pretty much uses the CoD engine for everything. If CoD is successful with it why can't anything else be successful with it right?

Then Eurocom gets hired to do more bond games there is no point in owning something if it doesn't make money right? If I own it I gotta make games out of it so I make more money. Too bad it doesn't work that way. If consumers don't care about something then releasing the same shit over and over wont' change that. So guess what happened to Eurocom? Bond game released under.

A more recent example is LucasArts that developer went under I they weren't even doing bad. Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, so they had to work for Disney. They had multiple games in the pipeline and didn't get to release a damn thing cause Disney didn't care for any of it. One game really stood out Star Wars 1313, so much for that it looked really promising.

Publishers are the ones with the money that have a say in everything. They got a say in the price of games now. The release dates (hence why games are rushed), game details (why just about every game has online. Hey look at CoD they did it lets do it too cause it sells.) Developers don't even got control of their own work anymore. The term developer needs to be changed to grunt cause thats what they are.

The only company that comes to mind that I would work for is Rockstar. That's the only company that comes to mind that hasn't separated so greatly between Publisher and Developer. Both divisions of that company share the same ideas and principals. Release good games every so often, so the market doesn't get over-saturated and so that their IP's remain timeless classics. If you don't like the last GTA or the last Max Payne fine thats your opinion. Their sells say otherwise though and clearly this method works. Valve and Gearbox now come to mind as good companies.

Rule of humans, I noticed this with the time I've had on this earth. No matter what you like, or dislike there is always someone else that likes/ dislikes the same thing. You may be few in numbers, but they are out there. So when I say developers are in it for the love of gaming I know this to be true. I had aspirations to be a developer cause I love gaming I know there are others out there like me. They do it for games not money. I lost that interest because of the total control Publishers have. I could still become, but why? Just so I could possibly work for the only 3 companies worth working for. Yeah no thanks I'd rather not.

/End Rant.

It was I who posted the link about the cut to used game sale profitability. Basically, Microsoft's policy is said to make it where retailers selling used games will stand to pull as little as 10% of the cut, with the rest going to MS and the publisher of said game.

Also, anyone selling (and I would also think renting) used games would be REQUIRED to register under some special program with Microsoft to be authorized to do so. So local Mom and Pop stores would doing illegal business if they sell used games without being on the program.

Just to add to this, Sony tends to have good business relationships with their developers (1st party and 3rd party exclusives). Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Insomniac (3rd party), Sony Santa Monica, Guerrilla, Polyphony Digital, etc. are all devs that seem to be given the freedom to design their games how they want without someone "over their shoulder" telling them to "add this, do that, put in multiplayer, be like COD, etc".

I use internet more than I drink water or go to the bathroom...it's virtually impossible to me, do not open Facebook at least 10 times in a day. I don't see a problem with a check once at day. Trips? Vacations? I have 21 days free, every 12 months...not more, not less.

Remember that time Live got hacked and was down for 6 weeks? Or when the PSN was hacked and offline for 2 months? Or when Diablo 3 launched and it took Blizzard THREE MONTHS to fix the servers, or when the same thing happened to SimCity?

You can say you are always connected, and that may be true, but the guys maintaining the servers will go down, and you will be locked out of your games. You will not be able to play games you had to pay money for, because something went wrong on their end.

Would Microsoft be willing to keep their servers up 5,6 or 7 years down the line? And just to verify your console?

Say a bad storm hits your area, doing hella damage to cables and power lines and stuff. Your power goes out. Power comes back later on that day, but your internet is out for 3 days. That's 2 days you WON'T BE PLAYING XBone games!

But that's just short-term. Servers going out is one of the long-term effects.
