Dead or Alive 5 is the fifth installment of the franchise. Released seven years after its predecessor,
Dead or Alive 4, it marked the first mainline title after the series creator Tomonobu Itagaki's departure from the company.
Dead or Alive 5 was developed by Team NINJA and published by Koei-Tecmo for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 console platforms. Due to the use of SEGA's
Virtua Fighter license within the game, a partnership was formed which allowed for SEGA to publish and distribute the title in Europe. The game was announced on September 14, 2011 at the Tokyo Game Show 2011 with a planned release date of a year later. The North American release was on September 25, 2012; Japanese release two days later on September 27; followed by the European release the next day on September 28.
The game featured two new core mechanics titled the
Critical Burst and the
Power Blow. Additionally, it added two new playable characters to the roster Rig and Mila, and it featured three guest characters from the
Virtua Fighter roster including Akira, Sarah, and Pai. The game was successful enough to spin off additional updated titles, each with their own new features and updates as the months progressed.
Two years after the destruction of the TriTower, headquarters and symbol of DOATEC...
Helena Douglas has begun the task of rebuilding DOATEC, this time with the aim of using its technology for peaceful ends. She has ordered the dissolution of the Biotechnology Division, the indefinite suspension of the Military Division's Projects Alpha, Epsilon and Omega, and the expulsion of all members of the Donovan faction from DOATEC's offices around the world.
Now in the same position once held by her father, DOATEC founder Fame Douglas, Helena has announced that she intends to hold the fifth Dead or Alive tournament, to show the world the principles and philosophies upholding the new DOATEC.
