Nioh General Discussion

P-P-P-P-P-P-POWER!
The fuck you talking about?! There were threads! A contest! I won a shirt!

Anyways I haven't had a chance to ever try nioh. How's the gear looking? I got bored and dropped Blood borne when I realized all gear was the same ragged coats. Half the reason I love dark souls is the fashion.

So do you think nioh will be like blood borne or dark souls in that regard? Also are there playable females or is it just the dude in the ponytail from the promo images?

This isn't a create-a-character type of game. It's telling a specific story about a specific person. There appears to be a female supporting character who is relevant at some point of the game. Whether or not she is playable I have no idea, nor do I care much as the game is not about her. There is plenty of different gear to use, and it all has a fairly drastic affect on how you control William.

Is there a time limit on the demo again? I did not like the first one, but am hoping this will change that. It's mainly about the gameplay that turns me off.
Won't have a chance to play until Monday.

My impressions so far:

The Good
+ Weapon/Stance Variety
+ Collision Detection (see, From Software? it's not that hard)
+ Combat speed/rhythm
+ Animations and fluidity
+ General Atmosphere and Creature Designs
+ No item degradation

The Bad
- Bloodstains/Amrita system
- Whatever is going on with the Blacksmith
- Walls
- Boring/tedious equipment and items
- Skill type distribution
- Occasionally confusing U.I. and mechanics (I would like a clear base dmg vs full familiarity dmg field on weapons, for example)

Guys I can't tell if this is a bug or not. Has this happened to anyone else?

After buying the Windstorm move for the dual katana's, I lost the ability to do the Water Sword technique even though I have it unlocked.

and regarding the ki dash thing, fuck i don't know this game already feels great and the more i play with it the more i feel like they would break the game. you ARE incentivized to change stances through other upgrades so while you may not be able to one shot a boss with one stamina bar maybe you shouldn't be able to. this is clearly a balance choice and they've given you so much stamina to work with in low stance already it seems like it would be overkill especially considering enemies stagger more easily now.

Well yeah, I just told you that the game is indifferent even if they removed that Ki cancelling type. Game is still good without it.

What Stat(s) have you guys found most useful to upgrade?
Heart I believe is the one. For Ki and sword damage. But I prefer single sword to dual. It's playstyle specific.

It doesn't have a time limit in game but the beta is not available after 9/5.

i started my second file throwing some into Spirit and Ninjustu. the passive benefits of the guardians shouldn't be ignored since they can be obtained rather easily, and you can get some pretty broken stuff like invisibility in ninjustu. throw a smoke bomb down and enemies will NOT attack you no matter how much you wail on them.just make sure you don't push them out of the smoke.

after that i put some in stamina so i could have some decent defense this time around.

honestly with physical upgrades you mainly want them for the points rather than the stat upgrades especially at the beginning and you can earn points just by playing.

Aesthetically I prefer the single sword as well, but for gameplay reasons I've found the dual swords fit my style better. I kind of wish the single sword parries were instant-activation but small active window techniques. The way they are now, having a longer activation time than the attacks you want to parry with it, requires too much risky anticipation, IMO. Kind of hoping they change that (make it function more like Just-Frame guards with Royal Guard in DMC). That and the God of Wind combo for the dual swords is just so damn versatile.

Can you earn Magic/Ninja points through gameplay? I've netted a bunch of Samurai points this way, but no magic/ninja points.

i don't think so. if it is possible you wouldn't get much of anything considering how little you actually use those skills in comparison to a weapon.

also finally used the blacksmith and she scares me, not because she looks scary but because the changes she makes seem to be completely random. ONLY use it for skills you don't care about. that said she did just give men Fire 20 which im pretty sure is the best buff you can get in the game so far.

Whay is the black smith?

Btw any have tips for the tongue teasing bossing? I can't beat her.

you unlock the blacksmith after completing demon island or she should be unlocked already if the game recognizes you beat the alpha. Go to the "starting area" on the level selection map and you should see her as an option now.

Use high stance with the single katana and use the triangle after dodging her attacks. Try to stay close, and circle to your left. The hardest attack is the whirlwind since it covers the entire duration of your dodge and tracks you as you move. No great advice on countering that move, since my strategy was to stay very close. Make you you dodge backwards for the life steal.

I was doing pretty good in this demo until Tachibana. This dude is kicking my ass, haha.

haha @Brute, I was actually doing that! But I was still getting my ass kicked :(

What I found that works good for me is just now is, I just keep using the ki pulse L1+Triangle to drain her Ki, then when she runs out I go to town with her using the Dks xD

Yea man, that Whirlwind is annoying >.<

Ah! Yeah, I don't have the Ki Blast. Been upgrading what looks cool instead of what's potentially useful (go me).

BTW, does anyone know if the rainy stage/Chimera boss from the Alpha is included in the Beta? Can't seem to find how to access it.
