Any early netcode impressions?

So wait, I can't make a private lobby for myself and a group of friends? Are you kidding me?
I'm pretty sure you can do that. He's referring to ranked matches, where you can only play against random people. There are no lobbies for ranked matches. For unranked, there are lobbies and there is no reason to assume that you can't make it private. It's just that all those matches will be unranked at all times.

Anyway if its really unplayable im gonna be dissapointed, but at least it wont be a pain to decide between doa5 and ttt2 as far as online is concerned... But really im seeing responses about people that say online is only for training and stuff but thats not the case not every player is a tourney player and if the online isnt viable its gonna hurt the game bad...
True, true, especially since DOA5 has very good chances of bringing in a brand new audience. And this brand new audience isn't going to jump straight into the tourney scene, so guess where they're going to get impressions of the community?

All seems mixed for most of the part. I'll judge when I'll play it and if its at least decent I'll play with friends only and if its good I'll play ranked matches simple as that.

I can't find any matches at all LOL. Earlier when Rikuto was over we checked and found three open lobbies, all of which were French. Wasn't gonna have my first matches go down like that. Of particular importance is the fact that immediately upon launching into the online menu, you hear Chosen1's song. I am NOT pleased about that, given there is no way to change it or turn it off. Custom soundtracks on the 360 ftmfw.

EDIT: So I finally got some matches in with some randoms online. Both were 4 of 5 bars to me and were somewhere in the south judging by their gamertags (Lousiana and...something similar). HOLY FUCK IT'S GODDAMN TERRIBLE. I mean, this is when online play is supposed to be smoother. Shit was nearly unplayable. Lots of dropped inputs, extremely slow, and I actually lost a match when I was scrubbed out. Dude was just striking a few times, running up and grabbing, and running that back over and over. I couldn't do anything about it because of the lag. Now I'm not just salty because I lost, since I won the three before that, so check that before you go accusing me. It's utterly ridiculous that the online play is this bad.

I'm still confident in TN and the DOA 5 netcode,
I mean, come on man, you're playing the game before the release date >_>

That's like walking on stage before showtime...no maintenance,no lights, no props, no other actors.

Speaking to those who haven't played a single second of the game, relax.

Patches are abound, and with TN incorporating VF characters, I wouldn't doubt if they were assisted with the final version of the netcode.

You don't get how that works, do you? Servers run smoother before they're heavily populated, not worse. You think reviewers are going to be playing on servers that are running like garbage pre-release? Come on. I get optimism and the game itself is otherwise phenomenal, but don't be delusional.

I really don't understand people's complaints about the online. The 1v1 ranked matches is freaking great. Being paired up with random people via matchmaking and no rematch option to prevent boosting. Lobby matches are fixed for casual play and no way interfere with your rank. The only real complaint that I agree with is the two round matches that need to bump to three.

I guess people don't play enough Halo 3 to understand.

This happens every time. People get the game early and says the netcode sucks, people say that it isn't released yet and when it is released it still sucks. Happened to KOF and MK. Even patches didn't help. Persona got fixed but that was a different problem.

Im not making the same mistake again of buying games with shitty online, only to have them collect dust; even though it may be one of my fav fighters this gen (KOF13)

On the opposite side of the coin, don't take experiences with the first week of online play as precedent. The servers will be seeing the highest amount of traffic (well, unless something of EVO '04 caliber happens for DOA5) on release and we should expect to see the WORST of DOA5 ONLINE for a little while. Sadly.

Edit: Not saying the netcode is or isn't going to be buttcheeks, just saying that whatever state it's in, prepare for the worst of the worst for awhile.

It all comes down to individuals and their connections. *shrug*

I'll just wait until the game releases before I jump on any boats.

If you mean after launch, absolutely. Servers get hammered for a bit after the launch of a new game. If they're ready for the traffic it won't be an issue. I've let the right people know the online needs attention, so I'm hopeful it'll be handled. Like I said, the game itself as an absolute blast to play. Rikuto and I fought for a solid four to five hours yesterday, though not all of it was straight versus. Good times, though the bastard adjusts to shit too quickly for my liking...

Good stuff, needed to hear that. It's probably waaaay t0o late to make significant, safe netcode adjustments but hey, the Online mode is always a wildcard when it comes to fighting games. Even if the lag is, at worst, constantly threatening the gameplay, as long as it keeps players interested in taking their game to the next level is what I care about....

Whoever is host is the "server", last I heard DOA5 is still peer to peer.
TN isn't putting up servers for us to play on, at least not on 360. This isn't an EA situation where Microsoft gave them control over online servers.

You cant really compare a FPS to a fighting game because fighting games run so heavily on frame rate and timing. The complaints are about the overrall quality of the matches which i hope becomes better when the games released. From what im hearing its hit and miss some people are having a decent experience others arent.

"Online Mode:
Simple Match - Basically quick match, you can set amount of rounds and region
Rank Match - set amount of rounds, region, and opponent strength max/min
Lobby Match - round, region, opponent strength, fight rules and fight type, up to 16 players
Leader Boards - you can download replays here
Fighter List - Rival System like SCV. If you view them as a rival after your match, it gives you stats on your win/loss ratio against them. You can also send them throwdowns or invites to your game. Also able to remove them if you want."

Here's a quote from another user that has the game. Perhaps this will provide a better understanding in regards to what the online mode currently offers. This of course doesn't make up for the poor netcode but considering that the game isn't officially slated to release until the 25th, I'm sure it'll be patched and brought up to efficency. I think Team Ninja knows that a lot is riding on the proper sucess of DoA5
Thank you sir i had the impression that the online was setup similar to TTT2 where there were no lobbies and this is very good news. Now i guess the only thing im really worried about is the quality of the netcode and if it isnt up to par hopefully it will be patched SOON.

The netcode is probably the most important part of a game for me. VF5FS has great online but it's now a barren wasteland and I'm not that interested in SCV. DOA5 is what's keeping me all this time and knowing that there's a realistic chance I won't be able to play smoothly is a huge disappointment.
Its true but all you have to do is go to sites like virtuafighter.com to find players who will be on to add to your friends list. I always find ranked matches for the most part but i do wish more people were playing the game. I like you am not really interested in SCV or TTT2.
