FSD casual thread word of the day: Bland

How everyone urges x thing is bland and how y in comparison is positive Z adjective.

Oh joy arguments over semantics is about as effective as trying to slam your head on concrete to boost your intellect.

Edit: Hayate is bland because he is "that other" male ninja that emits zero presence while not trying to be stealthy. Ein isn't bland solely because of the shades and screaming Toriyah! all day. I like slamming my head on concrete from time to time too.

Just admit it. You liked Nicole for her voice and nothing else lol
no, I like her in the same way I liked Leon. moveset may be a clone, originally, but they were presented as so much more of a badass about it. her voice was just part of her overall presentation that I liked. llike Rachel has some of Nicoles moves, but she's nowhere as awesome when doing it, because she doesn't present herself appropriately.

? I'm just Welp aware that my preference for badass girls like Mila and Nicole is in the minority, and people would rather have generically sexy but otherwise extremely bland girls like Rachel. all I know is, I'd wanna party with Nicole, her persona was awesome.
Oh PLEASE. You choose to quote me for this? You know that of just about everyone on this site I am the least supportive of sexualizing the female characters of everyone, you included. You submitted a Mila costume with her damn midriff showing. You may call it "badass," and it may be. But what's important here is that you found it sexy. You find this so-called "badass" sexy. That puts you in the exact same category as everyone else. Your boner just manifests in a slightly different fashion.

So don't give me this: "I'm the only one who wants badass girls, and you all just want sexy girls" nonsense. That is such fuckin' bullshit. The fact of the matter is Nicole was FUCKING BORING. She had a grand-total of three traits:
1) Bland stereotypical lines ("That's how you hit like a girl," feeding into the "girls aren't usually badass so when they are you should find it sexy just 'cause they have a vagina" fetish)
2) Movelist (which was expanded upon and improved for Rachel)
3) She looked like Master Chief (and obviously that aspect won't be coming back)

So, it can't be point 2 that has you hooked. Can't be point 3. So it must be point 1, 'cause you're a sucker for the stiffy just like everyone else.

Look, I'm not trying to be a dick, but don't pull that subtly implicit hipster "I'm the only one who likes ____" mentality on everyone. Nicole is lame and deep down you know it.

Fixed since you missed the recent thread theme memo

But @Brute is right and is showing @Argentus what he's doing when he talks down on characters he disapproves of (which he has done on more than a few occasions). Regardless of who we dislike in this game, each character appeals to x amount of players and it's very close-minded to write a character off as bland and degrade them b/c you don't personally like them.

Nicole's personality was just as bland as any other characters if not even more; her quotes were extremely clichee imo, but I must admit her stage was amazing and her invisibility taunt was pretty cool.

I found her the most interesting because for the first time, a female character was actually ibtimidating. no cutesy poses it cheers, just a wall of a woman making a direct and blunt statement how she's going to end you.

Oh yes if I really get motivated I could type out a lengthy thesis paper on why exactly each character is bland from my perspective (even Ein lol) out of sheer boredom, but no one wants to read that so I let the people enjoy the characters they are appealed to and leave it at that. More people are happy that way. When will people be happy here?

Tina's intro was "I'm gonna open a can of whoop-ass on you."

Ayane said she would fucking KILL you ("send you to the next world")

That's a lot more intimidating than some coward in power-armor saying that genetic enhancements and half-ton sci-fi armor is "hitting like a girl"

I'm still mostly against Brand New Characters as DLC for DoA5U (though they're a better choice than more Guest Characters).

Save them for DoA6 where they can actually be fleshed out. Use the DLC to bring back the missing characters (ie. Tengu, Raidou), or promote DoA/NG NPCs to playable characters (ie. Niki, Rio). Give us people we can recognize and know what their deal is.

(The exception to this is Donovan, who I think should be saved to be a boss in a later game.)

Promoting NPCs to playable even allows for new movesets to be brought into the game for people who want that (ie. It's pretty much certain Irene knows how to fight, but we don't know what fighting style she uses). Granted, some NPCs are known to use the same martial art as a currently playable character, but they could always utilize it differently and play nothing like them (ie. Hitomi's Dad would obviously use Karate, but he may not use it like Hitomi or Ein).

Considering there are likely only going to be 2-3 more characters, and there are easily over a dozen already in the universe that could be used (and potentially already have fanbases), I don't see the point in building another one from scratch.

I'm trying not to do it ss much, though this time was purely in retaliation for calling nicole bland.

Sorry, but she actually was completely superficial, literally. She just consisted of armor and two or three cheesy lines. There was nothing more underneath...
Speaking of cheesy lines, wouldn't mind a character with a cheesy pun filled mind to shake things up.

except Tina doesn't back it up because she does flashy moves that require the victims participation to work. ayane is a ninja, so nothing intimidating there, just a buncha little pokes and slaps. When nicole said "this is how you hit like a girl", the line only worked because the girl just hit you like a truck. plus her openers of "you have no business here", "enough is enough", "I'll put you out of your misery", "that bad day you're having just got worse", "you ain't gonna make it", "nothing for you here but a shortcut to hell" all really worked for her precisely because unlike other females, she could actually back up blunt statements like that, and I loved her for it. yyou knew that it was gonna HURT going up against her.

replace "armor" with "bare skin" and that also describes the rest of the female cast in 4. Nicole was the only intimidating female to date, a big part of why I miss her. and it was more than just the armor.
To be fair if your familiar to halo lore, the female Spartans in their youth before the genetic enhancements and way before the power armor could still beat the crap out of full grown ODST so I wouldn't go as far as calling her a coward lol
especially when the Ninjas hide behind magic ninja shit lol. but its part of why I'm suggesting recreating her without the armor.

Technically this is not true (also, just as bad as the close-mindedness that David Gregg was calling out Argentus for in post #19527).

We know Nicole is a 6'8 Filipino woman who likes anime and competitive shooting, and that her favorite food is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo-halo (a Filipino dish and also pun on her Halo origins). She's a genetically altered soldier renown for her ability. Judging by her Bio, one can also infer that she is rather intelligent as she understands the problems time travel could cause and wants to avoid them.

She also had well over a dozen lines.

So basically, we know more about her than we do about Marie Rose (or various NPCs that people on this very site have requested). Heck, you could argue we know more about her than we do about Rig (and he got a prominent part in this game's story mode).

Also, I believe Argentus has always maintained that you could retain her backstory by just stripping out the Halo and time travel parts and replacing them with her being genetically enhanced by MIST as one of their many genetic experiments (ie. Project Delta or whatever other Greek letter you want to use that hasn't been used yet).

If you wanted to argue against her inclusion, it'd be more along the lines of looking into who actually owns the rights to Nicole-458. Team Ninja definitely doesn't own the armor she was wearing, but she was specifically created for DoA and her backstory was created by Itagaki working with Bungie, which makes her in a bit of a murky situation.

EXACTLY, THANK YOU. stripping the Halo out of her should get around most of the copyright or trademark issues, and I doubt the halo guys would have a huge problem with letting TN keep Nicole as a non halo character.
