The father of FF, Hironobu Sakaguchi, called FF9 his favorite. It definately needs more recognition though. It's too bad that of all the FF's, the fans seem to ignore FF9...Final Fantasy IX is unloved by Square Enix
From the voice of a biased FF fanboy, I'd recommend to get it on PSN for the simple reason of being able to play it right now. FF6, 7, 9, and X are my favorites in the franchise. I could sit here until the sun sets talking about the ejaculatory implications that FF9 bring on, but I'll keep it brief:Apparently so since they decided to put FFIII on steam after VIII instead of IX...
Idk whether I should stll wait for a steam release or just get it on PSN
Nothing wrong with that, man. I loved all three FF13 games. The hate on FF13 is asinine. People bitched about the narrow and linear maps. Those same people seemed to have forgotten what the maps in FFX look like.I actually know the story of FFIX since I watch an LP from start to finish, I mainly just want to experience it myself since it's probably the PS1 FF out there not a fan of VIII and VII wasnt as great as everyone makes it out to be but still good in comparrison. (but hey what do I know right? lol my favourite FF game is Lightning Returns)
In FFX, you could at least backtrack to previous locations throughout the game (some by manually mapping the coordinates). This was more convenient and instantaneous than previous methods of roaming the world map, but essentially is the same layout as the other classic FF games.Nothing wrong with that, man. Not to mention that LR aka XIII-3 was actually cool and took a new perspective on the FF franchise and returned alot of classic stuff too.Nothing wrong with that, man. I loved all three FF13 games. The first chapter of the FFXIII trilogy, by comparison, limits your free roaming as far as Gran Pulse, and nothing more. This was soon remedied in the later two games (albeit involving time travel and later a time limit), but the argument lies in the fact the broader sense of free roaming should've been there from the get-go. This is but one of the reasons why the first game got so much hate, and how the stigma would affect the interest of the later sequels.
Yeah, that kinda sucks but it wouldnt fit with the whole l'Cie on the run plot point which is probably why they took it out but brought it back in XIII-2 and with more of a classic flare in LRThe only thing, to me, that was missing from FF13 is arriving to a new town and kicking back at an inn and doing some shopping for new gear. Then let's chat with some citizens, break into every unlocked house and loot the place, then head out on the world map to make a bee line to Point B.
Peninsulas of Power, extra weapons, extra armors, extra spells, trade-ins to get extra weapons/armors/spells, etc.Hey, valid argument that you were able to backtrack through the area you just went through in FFX. However, honestly, how many people actually backtracked? Rare is the player that did that... in any FF. Even if a player did backtrack... what was the reason?
Y'know, that seriously never occurred to me... the l'cie on the run premise. That makes a lot of sense when you put in into context. The gameplay in FF13 were dictated by the storyline. I understood and accepted that aspect is why I had to use specific characters in specific areas. The entre party was split up and doing their own thing in completely different locations. It's the only way they can tell the story.Yeah, that kinda sucks but it wouldnt fit with the whole l'Cie on the run plot point which is probably why they took it out but brought it back in XIII-2 and with more of a classic flare in LR
...all of which were done near the end of the games when the airship was available.Peninsulas of Power, extra weapons, extra armors, extra spells, trade-ins to get extra weapons/armors/spells, etc.

My issue is that lightning is/was such a boring load of a character. I was just in it for Fang, who was the polar opposite of Lightning, and appropriately, VERY interesting!Nothing wrong with that, man. I loved all three FF13 games. The hate on FF13 is asinine. Snow was a dumbass but he was awesome yes lol. A bare knuckle brawler throwing grenades who rode w bike made of naked women 69ing each other. Sweet.The only thing about Fang that appealed to me was that she controlled Bahamut, once I got that out of my system she moved back to story appearance only mode. Otherwise she is as equally as boring as Lightning.
Snow on the other hand had more personality than both of them combined and all he did was go about all three games yelling "Serah!" and "I'm a HERO!" whenever possible while being the best tank you could ask for (sure that and Commando was all he was good for). And Shiva motorcycle is the most badass thing in the first game. Seriously.
I'm not looking forward to the replays solely because for the first like two discs Freya is barely usable.FF games are all linear. Anyone that thinks they were "open" prior to FF13 has simply been fooled by Square's smoke and mirrors. They all were formulated on the premise of "go from point A to point B" with the occasional "sidequest" mixed in. You never had the freedom to travel where you wanted. You never were allowed to visit locations on your own terms. You play out one location, then based specifically on the story, you traveled directly to the next location. Feel free to "backtrack" Skyrim style if you missed the Antidote in the chest.
I liked Lightning. I enjoy the stoic MC from time to time. Having the jubilant clown Tidus is also good on occasion. So is having the "what am I" lead such as Zidane... or the schizophrenic bro syndrome of Cloud. What I mean is that I like the variety. If I was subjected to a whiney clown in every FF, then I'd be sick of it.
The "lesser" characters I really liked in the FF's I've played:
FF4 = Rydia
FF5 = Meh.
FF6 = Cyan
FF7 = Red XIII
FF8 = Quistis
FF9 = Freya
FFX = Wakka
FF12 = Balthier
FF13 = Sazh
@Argentus
I've played FF9 like 3-4 times, and I always used Freya in my party.
Burmecia gave me cancer.
