They didnt? Oh, so was that comparison thing I saw on Google just a what if comparison thing?

EDIT: Yes it was, I just saw the final image Russian posted where they didn't touch his hair. XD. What a relief, that final design looks alot more solid than the original before the censorship.

nobody reads what i write :(

Star Ocean 5 is going to be censored!

In an interview with 4gamer, Star Ocean 5 character designer Akira Yasuda, director Hiroshi Ogawa, and producer Shuichi Kobayashi revealed that not only is the studio aware of western criticism of revealing female character designs, they’ve made changes to the game because of that very same western criticism.

“Recently there’s been a trend in games where if you put out a character that shows a lot of skin, later on you might have to make a lot of revisions, ‘although she’s erotic, there’s not a lot of skin showing’ is the feeling you get,” said Yasuda.

“In fact, it got a rating of C by CERO (Editor’s Note: Cero C is ages 15 or older),” Yasuda continued. He explained why the game’s spellcaster, Fiore, is wearing such a revealing outfit. “Fiore uses a lot of displayed crests on her skin to cast curses. That was part of her setting."

Finally, the developer confirmed they’ve slightly censored the game, in the form of Miki’s panties. You can view a comparison above, with the first image before the change, and the second image after the change.

“Recently, there’s been a lot of flak from overseas countries saying that if you put teens in ‘sexual’ underwear it’s not good,” said Kobayashi. “So we increased the amount of clothing.”
“How distressing (laughs),” Ogawa said in a follow up.

It's not just changed for the Western release but also for Japan and gamers there were outraged. Some of what they had to say about the matter and us prudish foreigners, lol:

Next they will probably fill in the squares with white here to make the chess board look complete:

This censoring is just plain unneeded. And they better not censor that green haired girl's outfit, I happen to like it. :-/

2 things

1) its really hard to take Japanese seriously when they refer to the rest of the world as "foreigners". It really shows their arrogance which ironically is supposed to be a personality trait severely frowned upon in japan.

2). "Foreign teens wear sluttier underwear anyway".

This I laugh at because they're not wrong. Its why this censorship is silly to begin with. Oh no you can see plain white panties under a miniskirt.

Whereas I can walk down the street and see the lacy thongs of half the 15 year old girls walking by.

Censorship has no real credibility behind it. Girls on the street and even daytime TV commercials are often worse than whatever it is they are trying to censor.

meh they can go fuck themselves if they're pissed off at us as a whole. American culture is going through a turbulent period where people are re-looking at the way women have been portrayed in media and while some of it has lead to some pointless headaches a lot of it has had positive benefits. it's going to take awhile before things settle down and see how everything turns out on our end.

that said nobody is forcing Japan to play our politics. as long as it isn't blatantly breaking the law with underage characters they can do whatever the hell they want and if they do censor themselves don't go bitching about americans because we had nothing to do with that. 99% of the time its the Japanese who preemptively censor themselves because they don't want to get yelled at online, too bad you're going to anger someone regardless of your decisions the only difference is do you piss off long time fans who you will deal with for YEARS, or piss off that person taking things a bit to seriously that will not give a shit in a week.

It's honestly shit like this where you just want to spite them for these dumbass decisions because they keep pandering to a few instead of their overall consumer base.

Just because Western Gaming Media is talking about it doesn't mean we agree with it...

Yeah, I honestly don't care about this whole sexualization is bad and should be censored thing. Women are sexualized regardless, and you don't see anyone crying foul when men are being presented as shirtless hyper-masculinated beefcakes who also wear questionable outfits. When I see them making an effort to stop equal gender sexualization, then I'll bat an eye. Right now, it's just an annoyance and it needs to stopped. And most of these celebrity females and girls of today seem to invoke hypersexualization anyway.

The worst part about it is that it's, again, an absolutely pointless change just to "make people happy". And I don't even give a fuck about Granny Panties because I don't really need to go much further than Reimi over the fact that she still had gratuitous fanservice anyway despite wearing spats and overall wearing a pretty conservative outfit(BECAUSE of the focus on her butt and the ass physics to show)

But I will be PISSED the the Cat Girl Witch(somehow I forgot her name) gets her outfit censored because they even stated that it's FOR her magic. Because nothing will be dumber than breaking your own world just to make people who don't give a shit about the game happy.

What annoys me is that they're trying to save their skin trying to appease feminists and people who don't even play the game. It's like they look up random JRPGs,like and such on the Internet and then decide that's what they're going to intentionally get censored, thus ruining the game for players who wanted to play it the way it is. This wasn't happening years ago when I was younger...

It wasn't. Again Star Ocean 4 where you had 2 party members looking like this:

Atleast it also had obvious fanservice for the girls in case of Arumat:

In most cases, I understand why they never say anything about male fanservice, because showing off stomach and chest isn't considered as sexualized as when a female does it, or worse. That Final fantasy Mobius thing that Russian-Chiropractic posted a long while ago is typically how far it has to go before they start complaining, and even then it mostly comes from male fans who feel uncomfortable or demasculinized playing a male character who shows that much skin, even though they have no qualms and find it acceptable playing as shirtless males to begin with.

It's still pretty dumb since the upper body of males is what's most fetishized about us.
Just because people don't complain about it doesn't mean it isn't there. All you have to do is change him into a woman and boom, instant fanservice.
