Because they are matching the framerate with the standard framerate used in anime as opposed to the 60fps the actual game runs at. But it doesn't wind up looking like the anime because the anime uses motion blur and other effects to compensate for the lower framerate, whereas this game's cutscenes don't (ironically, they are present with the in-game animations, which also run at a higher framerate). So that's their "logic," if you want to call it that (I don't).
Gameplay I'm a bit mixed on. I loathe the idea of 3v3, not only for gameplay reasons but also because it visually makes everything look like a chaotic mess, and doesn't reflect the way battles occur in the show/manga (characters typically resent "unfair" fights, and wish to face and defeat their opponents 1v1). That said, the 3D games seem to struggle when implementing movement due to the frequency of flying, so I'm happy to see a Dragonball game that is more "grounded" in a literal sense.
Yeah when you pick it apart like that it makes more sense WHY it ends up like that, just the end result looks really "off". And i'm really big on animation, camera angles, etc etc. And those look fine, but that lack of compensation for the low framerate just makes the whole thing look hideous.
and gameplay....i never liked the blazblue/mvc/guilty gear playstyle, and I REALLY dont like those games with TAG because it becomes a giant faceroll, so the actual game is a hard pass for me.
But what do you mean the 3d games struggle implementing movement? Do you just mean staying on the ground? If so, I agree, but a 2d fighter lacks the sheer scale and mobility of a Dragonball game, which is something the 3d fighters have down pat, imo.
Also, this is not a videogame, but I recently saw the Tom and Jerry nutcracker movie. Its....really, really, bad.
The animation looks like its by people who are used to doing amateur CG animations instead of hand drawn animation.
Specifically, only one limb moves at a time, and it bugs the hell out of me to watch. Like if a person turns, first their head turns. Then the body turns. Then the legs turn. Even in the old animations, the body moved as ONE.
Or when its not being animated like THAT, its being animated like the CDi Zelda games where everything is just waving around at random while they talk.
Sure the 3D based ones capture the Dragonball feel better, but the 2D ones are way more balanced instead of being a big broken mess.
which if all you want is a generic fighter with a DBZ skin over the top, cool. But it really bugged me when the trailer came out and everyone was all "Finally a REAL dbz fighter!" Its like, um, no? This is just guilty gear with a DBZ skin (I'm over simplifying but you get the gist). I like dragonball games, not just dragonball THEMED games, so it's a pass for me. i may try it on sale or something at some point but eh.
