Only three more weeks and the new God of War will release on April 20th! :)
It's just God of War, there's no number attached to the title and there's no subtitle. This game is a completely new beginning, in a whole new mythology, with a whole new story and a whole new combat system. Just Kratos is the old Kratos, but he's a dad now. And that changes people too, I guess. ;)

Some quick facts:

- This time Kratos steps into Norse mythology
- Kratos is accompanied by his son
- the combat is more close and personal
- the story is more close and personal too
- The game will entertain you for 30+ hours
- There will be lots of branching paths, secret areas and optional bosses
- There will be light RPG elements
- The game will be much more mature and much less vulgar, but as brutal as ever

Here are the latest two amazing trailers:

Here's a good chunk of gameplay with commentary by Playstation Underground:

So, who's excited for this game? :) Did you already slay the Greek pantheon or is this one your first GoW game?

Cool thread. :) It's set up very nicely. If I get this game It will be the first GoW game I've played. I'm not sold on this game yet but It does look good from what I've seen in terms of concept art and the game graphics wise looks amazing.

Light RPG Elements = Light Grinding.

Edit: which would explain the 30 Hour length.

It is my first God of War too. :)
I only watched let's plays of the three main games just to kow what was going on in the story...which wasn't much, lol.
The prior games just never really appealed to me. This one will be very different though and it is checking all the right boxes for me. I just wished it was properly open world... But it apparently will be semi-open with lots to explore and discover.

By the way, here's a cool new video from Gamespot describing the game very well to everyone who still isn't sure what this game is like:

And this video was just released too, it's the guy who recreates the moves from fighting game characters on Youtube who mocapped Kratos! O:

It is so cool that they found him and gave him the job. Here he's doing DOA's Rig:

Wow that's really cool the thing about the guy who did the fighting game moves getting a job with them! Stuff like that is really awesome. And yeah the most I've seen of the previous GoW games has been some footage of the games on youtube etc, Gameplay wise It looked pretty good since I love Bayonetta and It's very close to that in terms of gameplay from what I've saw but Kratos as an actual character seemed awful lol so I wasn't really interested in it from that side but hopefully they've improved how Kratos is.

They've improved this aspect a lot. They really worked on the narrative and characterization of Kratos and other characters. Previewers say it's on a level with The Last of Us. Great writing and acting and Kratos seems much more relatable and even likable now...even though he is still a really angry and bitter dude. XD

Just watched the gamespot video, So maybe Kratos having a son now will make him less of an asshole, Also I totally feel like I saw Thor's hammer in that video there for a second? Maybe it was anyway.

In the newest The Lost Pages podcast level and quest designers give us more and very interesting info about the game world and side content of God of War:

http://godofwar.libsyn.com/episode-7-the-first-great-war

Some points regarding the game world:

- The game is not open world, but hub world-based.
- The world is interconnected, areas/spaces wrap around each other, there are lots of alternate routes and shortcuts to discover.
- An inspiration for the world design was Bloodborne.
- There are a couple of more open environments, with awesome vistas, like a big valley for example.
- While guided by the story, the player is also given freedom/choice to have a time-out from the main storyline to engange in a plethora of side content.

Points regarding side content/side quests:

- A completely new system had to be created for this game.
- The game contains much more side content than was originally planned. It's now much more than 10 hours worth of content.
- Designers visited the developers of Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone to exchange experience and ideas of quest design.
- There is great width of side content. There are not just collectibles, fetch quests or monster hunts, but also lots of A-grade, meaningful quests and whole quest lines
- They took great care to make side content actually rewarding, like earning special crafting material, weapons, armor and treasures, that help you in the main quest.
- Additionally to material rewards the side content enriches and fleshes out the world and lore, the NPCs you encounter, and the father/son relationship of Kratos and Atreus.

The idea of the world being open sounds pretty cool along with it having side content that will expand more of the lore and world. I haven't seen much about Bloodborne but I have for the Dark Souls games and they do do an amazing job of warping the world around so that multiple places end up in other places so that's cool.

What a coincidence that you posted right now, Jade, I was just about to shamelessly double post. ;)
I think this thread needs some screenshots:

They are amazing looking, The ginormous snake looks great, I've forgot how to spell his name lol but I know it. And that totally has to be Thor's hammer, Wonder if that huge man lying next to it is Thor?

It's really not that hard to keep in mind:
"Jörmungandr" or even simpler "Miðgarðsormr" (Midgard Serpent).

Funny you should ask that! Take a look here:

Lol I knew up until jormun...and then kinda forgot after that, And that video of the story of thor and the stonemason was really cool, I wonder who the narrator was? It was good though, He didn't seem to like Thor. :p

ORLY?

I just wished it was properly open world...
Name one good action game that was open-world.

They've improved this aspect a lot. They really worked on the narrative and characterization of Kratos and other characters. Previewers say it's on a level with The Last of Us.
So it's a generic, over-rated story that tries to distract players from its underwhelming gameplay? That's actually par the course for the GoW franchise.

- An inspiration for the world design was Bloodborne.
And I'm expected to enjoy it? For over 30 hours, no less? Funny. Very funny.

Points regarding side content/side quests:

- A completely new system had to be created for this game.
They... created something new for a new game? *gasp*

- They took great care to make side content actually rewarding, like earning special crafting material, weapons, armor and treasures, that help you in the main quest.
That describes the generic side quests present in virtually every game with side quests. Lumping a platitude onto the beginning is hardly an accomplishment.

At least you enjoyed writing this, huh?
Let's wait for release before already trashing the game. It might actually be done well.

Regarding the last point: Most games (for example Horizon Zero Dawn, which is at least one good open world action game) reward you with basically trash after in some cases long, arduous side quests/objectives. Experience points, in-game currency, a loot box with trash items inside (Horizon Zero Dawn), a weapon with seemingly good stats, that still looks weak compared to your already upgraded to the max weapon. Stuff you already have enough of or you can easily obtain in other ways.
The GoW guys explained in the podcast that they really want to reward you with cool and unique stuff after completing quests. Something where players actually might say: "Woah, this is cool, this was actually worth it! O:" They explained that they tested the quests and rewards with test players and they usually got way better scores for the same quests if they actually rewarded people with something worthwhile. This should be common sense really, but strangely it isn't in many games.

Anyway that story about Thor and the other guy was interesting, I'm guessing It's based on actual legends of Norse Mythology so that was uber cool, It really captured the zeitgeist of the Norse history I felt like. It also made it seem as If Thor could potentially be an antagonist in the game? Must be annoying for him to schlep that hammer around though but then again he's Thor so It's probably nothing, I wonder If Kratos will try to lift it and fail? I originally thought the stonemason was Thor too based on the screenshots but after seeing that story...clearly he's kaput, Also I imagine the stonemason's son could appear in the story too.

Ooh...someone is flaunting his German skills! I've never heard or seen anybody use "über cool" and "zeitgeist" in one sentence before. XD

I'm actually really thrilled for the shift to Norse mythology and all its characters and legends. There's some really cool (and mostly unknown) material in there. Some stuff is really f*ed up and some is quite humorous. They already confirmed that they'll have lots of side stories/information like that in the game, some actually light-hearted too. That would be a first in a GoW, right? I guess they want to make it more accessible to the masses/mainstream.

On another note, they just released a video explaining Leviathan, God of War's new weapon and what it does:

It at least looks "über cool"! XD

Thank you, I try lol. And for a second when you said leviathan you meant the huge underwater creature, His axe seems cool though. I know a bit about Norse mythology but not a massive amount but It will be interesting to see what parts of it they take from the mythology and include in the game.

Review copies of God of War have already been sent out and the review embargo will be lifted April 12th, which is one whole week before game release. That's very daring and unusual for Western games and it shows that Sony is very confident this game is going to garner critical acclaim...or that they are very stupid, lol.
