Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I might love utopia.
But I prefer karma...

Please comment, share, like, retweet if you believe some nice community project would be nice.
Team Ninja has Genra's old moveset, so it should not be "IMPOSSIBLE" or too "OPTISMISTIC", right ?

Thank you! :genra:

I should say, I do generally like your ideas Kwon. I rather see them on twitter than the typical desperate Tifa and Ryo Hazuki ones. I can't really add more to the idea of bringing back Genra. Genra, Shiden, Leon, Gen-Fu, Ein, Alpha 152, I'm up for any of them coming back in some way, honestly...

Edit: woohoo, a clean up. Thank ya modgod

Where did the Ryo Hazuki request hype even come from? It just started outta nowhere, this just seems like another bandwagon ppl jump in without knowing the main source, just like what happened with people requesting Kiryu in the Tekken community.

Don't want to go too off topic as it might derail the initial post. It actually started from Itagaki himself when he was still in the team at the time. From what people and fans gathered over the years, Itagaki was a huge fan of Yu Suzuki and a mentor to him. The game Shenmue was an inspiration for him according to Itagaki that it sparked some fandom out there to include Ryo in fighting games when he mentioned here and there on how Shenmue impacted his life to create projects in general. Even Itagaki himself stated that if he had the option to add him he'd do it in a heartbeat no questions asked.

This dates back way long before DOA6 even existed, and long before DOA5 or even DOA4 existed. Personally I like Kiryu more as he's more or less a bigger personality and feedback, but Sega characters fit well regardless since it was proven in 5 so there's that. Still prefer Kiryu though, but yeah. The Ryo request is even bigger than before because of the guest character implementation over the years of many different fighting games since it sells.

Someone asked before on why he didn't have the chance during those days. I would imagine that the rights to getting the character (or any Sega character for that matter) was no easy task. Especially the shift to console exclusivity via Xbox with Itagaki glorifying the platform which didn't exactly help. DLC wasn't even the norm so you'd have to add the character during it's initial development etc. On top of it, Sega characters are very expensive and money was tight back in the day.

---------------

As for Tekken, it started with Daisuke Sato (the body of the Yakuza series, since without this man Yakuza wouldn't even be here in the states) when he was doing a panel. With the answer of "Well if Harada-san wants to use Kiryu, sure go ahead":

Not to mention they just made a Shenmue 3....

But yeah, a lot of that info rings a bell. I had completely forgotten about it. It's a pretty ancient request then eh?

Has anyone considered if a Nioh guest character could be possible? Seems that would be the perfect way to draw people in. But honestly I don't think drawing people in is the issue as much as getting people to stay and keep playing is.

It is ancient stuff yeah. I would imagine if Itagaki had the option that day, he'd be the first guest before Nicole technically.

People have, but it comes down to who fit and who doesn't really. Despite William was the main character, the character simply doesn't fit DOA. He actually has zero knowledge to physical combat without the use of a sword and DOA avoids using swords. It's not like Genra generating plasma blades, this is different and it's clear as day. You'd be better off adding William in Soul Calibur. In addition, Nioh 2 doesn't even have a MC aside from your created character at this point, so it's unsure who would be a real main character from there on out.

The only other characters that fits is Hanzo from Nioh since he has actual knowledge to physical hand-to-hand ninja combat, has lore history with the Hayabusa clan (Yes Hayabusa lore is a thing in Nioh), is also a ninja, and has decent popularity. As well as Okatsu, but Okatsu you'd have to deal with legal papers since the model behind it is based off a real person whom you'd have to pay royalties to. Don't want to get off topic for poor Kwon trying to keep his thread stable lol.

Genra looks like he could fit in Nioh actually, lol. Man, now I see even more of an argument for a sword based FG from TN.

Genra could maybe come back some other way tho. Just like Alpha is to Kasumi like Evil Ryu is to Ryu, maybe Genra Ayane could be that for Ayane (like Ken's Violent Ken). There's a lot of creative ways old characters could come back in spirit. I like the idea of a character design contest like they've done for costumes, at least for one character, but I doubt KT would ever agree...

Now with the Genra topic. Since DOA meta has changed a bit, Genra (or a Genra reincarnation as the topic suggest) would be one of the characters that would need a complete overhaul. A complete change up from the ground and up because the character had projectiles and whatnot and had a lot of issues. Inb4 someone says "It wouldn't be Genra without the projectiles!" true, but Ryu Hayabusa had his removed from DOAD and he's still Hayabusa.

They'd have to do it in a way where this new and improved Genra would completely destroy the previous one to make people feel "why play that old Genra when you can play as this new one". If TN can grab that idea, it would be worth it in the long run. On top that people are asking for a new male which doesn't exactly sell like hot cakes considering the type of demographic you are dealing with, along with using Genra's ancient wonky Tyrant Stance moveset, which was plagued with issues as well.

If people actually want Genra back, then TN has to most definitely double work their ass off to do it (which can be rare for TN these days). On top of taking a risk to include it as a male. Since Genra was pretty ass in DOAD, I have doubts of his success unless they genderbent him and just thrown in there for sales.

I'd love Genra's successor to keep his fireballs and his tokkosho stance. Could be more acrobatic though.

I might be the only one wanting him to get this design, but oh well, I'm gonna share it anyway (Pinterest).

Hyōkossho is a play on Hyō (panther) and Tokossho (Genra's weapon). Thought it would work. Also, his fighting style could simply be Tiger Fist!
