You call DoA4 and 5 evolving? More like going backwards.
You're only talking about combat evolving, I get it. But when you have people like Grape say, "TN should go back to DOA 3.1" Its like he saying the ENTIRE game..... And that's the part that aggravates me.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Something like i30 that guarantees big damage and bypasses stun game. I just hope there's no limitation like power blow

An i30 launcher would be interesting also in another way: You know how you can delay a critical burst a little so that even if they hold it correctly, it hits later, in the recovery frames, and the counter hold whiffs? This could increase attacker advantage similarly, if they try holding your launcher too soon! = less guess-based escape chances for defender.

I always loved when I played doad and I'd counter someone and I'd say I thought they were gonna do a mid punch when in reality I held their mid kick because of the three point hold. I was so turned off by the doa5 demo because of it. If doa ever went back to a three point hold I'd probably quit.

Makes more sense logically than to just seperate mids, but it would only work out if it couldn't be done out of deep stuns.

System becomes more coherent and learning combos becomes more streamlined.

It only worked in older DoA's because throws were half the speed they are now and did twice the damage plus a multitude of other things. In the current stun heavy BS we have, a 3 point hold system would just be a nightmare...So I say no thanks to that shit.

Why in the world do people like the three point hold?

What DR2K said. It never made sense to me that they singled out mid strike hold inputs, separating hold inputs for punches and kicks, without also doing it for the holding of high and low strikes as well (6-point). To me, 3-point hold is just more of an intuitive system. They just need to tighten the window of opportunity, to discourage mid-hold spamming and make holding in deep stun impossible.

The reason it was separated is because the majority of attacks are in fact mids.

I know. But still seems counter-intuitive from the standpoint that a grab is a grab and the fact that mid strikes are the most common doesn't negate that. Whether I'm grabbing an arm or a leg, it's the same motion. So I think the game input should reflect that. Like I said, tighten the threshold so that spammers will be punished.
