Although on the Japanese site there's enough space for infinite characters I'm not getting my hopes up

Both sites appear to have the same space to me. Either way, this doesn't really mean much. Another row could pop up underneath the first when it fills up. I could be wrong, but I don't remember the original DOA5 site showing every row initially.
I continue to ask for it on their twitter's account, but I'm really sure that Tengu will return in the game. Shimbori talked about the return of Leon, Ein and Tengu in the next game, and now we have Leon and Ein confirmed for DoA5U, so be confident Tengu's disciples!!
I'm still confident. We still have about four months left until the game launches. That's plenty of time for more reveals. Not mention that we've also got E3 in a few weeks.
This game is gonna be a huge bust for me if he doesn't make it in though.

Exactly, remember that with DoA5 TN continued to reveal new informations until the time of its release. Alpha 152 was seen for the first time in the trailer for the launch of the game and her presence neither officially confirmed before the release.

Yeah Shimbori did say he'd like to bring back Tengu, but Hayashi isn't a fan... Probably the only hope is that they're not going to put Tengu on the site but it seems silly not to advertise everything a re-release has to offer, especially if every character will be immediately unlocked in 5U (hope hope)

It's still too early for that character organization on the site to mean anything right now. Like I said, once that row fills up, they can just add another one underneath it with a 'NEXT' icon.

lol, I don't understand some people....never go by the site at all because it can always be adjusted.
That's exactly what's going to happen, or they'll just shrink each slot,no matter how they do it the website is no indication of that's all we'll get. As well as levels both levels and character slots have been updated on DOA 5 when it filled, it's all about keeping us guessing. Why would they not add Tengu he's VERY original and doesn't share any fighting style with any character and his design in DOA 5 would be awesome and interesting. I would save him for a later reveal and teamninja would be stupid to not put him in. I still believe we're getting 6 to 8 characters, guess we'll see.

I discovered that the 14 bikinis actually is a rumor that comes just from the Amazon site (the official site of DoA5U don't say nothing about the number), in addition the place of the icons on a site is not enough to give evidence of the number of the roster. So until now we haven't any confirmation or real hints about how much characters will be added.
Anyway the only one that I'm sure will return is just Tengu.
This is practically confirmed with the addition of the Exibition mode in the last patch for DoA5: playing in versus will allow to use all the characters and almost all the unlockables outfits with the mode activated. I don't think that TN will make some changes to this system, included in the game just with the purpose to meet the expectations of who don't like to unlock these elements.

That's not a rumor, that's for the Japanese version Collector's Edition it's real and set in stone, there will be 1 more female. The same was said for DOA 5 when it came out and pretty much leaked Pai (except "of course" it said 12 Female Bikinis).
We might still have to unlock characters for online use though. I'm really hoping that everything is unlocked from the start though.

Thanks for the clarification, I really hope that if we will obtain just one new girl (if they don't plan to make more characters at the last) is Rachel and not one from VF (but my secret impossible wish is Irene...
)I can't agree here, I'm from the old school that enjou to play in single for unlock contents in fighting game XD
I don't like it because I don't want to have to waste my time doing a bunch of pointless crap I don't care about before I can finally play with my main character. Unlocking Tengu in DOA4 comes to mind.

On the opposite after all this effort, for me to play with such characters appear still more rewarding: to unlock Ayane in DoA1 for PSX is almost worse than Tengu in DoA4 (almost because there aren't Alpha152 to beat XD)
I didn't find Alpha all that hard, I just didn't like having to waste time fighting her with 17 characters in story mode, then waste more time doing it again in time attack with 21 characters.

IMO unlocking stuff is not only a huge waste of time but in a case like this it doesn't give fair representation to each character and creates antagonism.
Thankfully you can download and resign saves to avoid wasting time but you'll still be hated for using a character that most people think requires too much effort to unlock. I have a 91% avoidance ratio on XBL because two of my mains are Alpha and Pai, both with bullshit unlock conditions
