At first, I got into the series because VF (5 FS and 2) was in the game as arcade mini-games. But the overall story and Kiryu himself, BADASS! I played 1 Kiwami on how it all start, Lord, it was a good ride!
I'm just confused why it took Yakuza 0 to get people interested. Perhaps because of continuity consistency but all the subsequent Yakuza games had a recap. My first was the first one and I copped Mafia for the shits n giggles of it. Still waiting for Triad.
@Hold_Junkie93 Possible obscurity in the West, despite they were released here. I remembered reading that the team stated the franchise wasn't getting that much traction in the West until 0 came out.
Another thing that helped is that Yakuza 0 looks miles better than Yakuza 3, 4 & 5, which looked pretty dated in comparison. The PS4 really helped out with Yakuza 0 & Kiwami 1, especially with the 60fps frame rate and sharp 1080p graphics. Then SEGA produced the Dragon Engine and Yakuza 6 & Kiwami 2 could pass off as AAA games.
What got me in Yakuza series was Yakuza 4 and 5 for the PS3. The Yakuza 4 I had was a JPN version I ordered from Play-Asia because people thought the game was never going to come to the west until years later, I had to use Gamefaqs just to look for translate. Never played 1/2/3 since they were on platforms I no longer have. So to see Sega redo Y0 and so on allowed me to fully grasp Yakuza series better than ever lol
