Isn't Samsho like a poke heavy fighting game? Why would anyone need 3 hours in order to understand how to poke and zone out an opponent? I also feel that that might end up being the reason why many players will leave the game quite quickly.
I actually watched that video,or rather i had it playing in the background while playing samsho 6 to prepare for samsho 2019, but yeah I don't think there s anything wrong with it. Samsho is a unique kind of beast in today's climate and newer players are gonna need all the help they can get, and if James wants to make a 3 hour tutorial to help ppl then more power to him.
You're right. Nothing INHERENTLY wrong with it. It's just I think SamSho should be a no-brainer. Like especially anyone who has played poke heavy fgs. ST, 3rd Strike, and VF kind of naturally prepared me for what's to come. Also mained Shiki in NeoGeo Battle Coliseum. James Chen is an old head, I won't discredit the knowledge he might have. It's more like, "Homie, why waste your time?" people just seem mad fake to me
Happy go-lucky types saying, "Cool" this and, "Thanks" that. When people start hyping VF6 when and if it comes, best believe I'm going to closely pay attention to what's said. I didn't learn VF bc I said, "OMG loved this game xx years ago. Defo give it a shot." Na. I sat down, I played, joined a scene, asked to play. Now, I'm a dirty fanboy bc I see it through experience playing, not dreaming.
I don't think there's anything wrong with making tutorials/guides for games of that length. I say if you're passionate about it and want to help people then nothing should stop you no matter how easy or hard a game is
I admit that Chen creating a tutorial video that long for Samsho is overkill, but it should be noted that a lot of fighting game players have to start somewhere (i.e. the bottom). Kudos for the efforts I guess. Honestly, I wish that DOA5/6 games would get something like that because the games actually justify a tutorial that long.
ST, 3S VF, these games are like at least 15 years old, kids today don't know 'bout that shit, all they know is MK down 1 down 1 and Crush Counter Button 5, plus they don't really make 2D poke heavy neutral games like that anymore anyway, the only modern example i can think of is Koihime Enbu, and even that has a really small, but super dedicated, fanbase.
Also it's not 1995 anymore, jumping head first into the deep end is not the only way to learn fighting games lol. Such a method could mold you into the next best player but in this world of many, MANY alternatives it's too easy to be like "fuck this game, im going back to street fighter"
Though on the otherhand, to play devil's advocate, how much does a fighting game scene want those "fuck this game, I'm going back to Street Fighter" players? Those are the people that are some of the first to whine when they either don't know how to deal with something or complain when something doesn't play like [insert known established game(s) here].
