Hope everyone here is doing their part and staying safe, both physically and mentally, as are all your loved ones. Good luck everyone. If you see anyone being stupid:

I went downtwon to the city for the first time since this pandemic nonsense, and it's like real life Mad Max out there, barren streets, everything's closed, and what few people are around are wearing funky facemasks

Actually, I think the verdict is still out on whither masks help or not. Its up to everyone to decide for themselves, just look into the pros and cons and expert advice about them first. Personally, I have experience wearing masks and the discomfort of wearing them makes me touch my face more, plus I think it's more useful to wear if you're sick so that you dont make others sick (but then you shouldnt be out anyways)

9/11 honestly wasn’t that bad, I think people make it this huge thing while these things happen on a daily basis in the Middle East. I don’t think society will change because of this virus, it’ll pass and people will move on.

Well, your views are your views, but I'll just say that generally, for people my age on this side of the world, the two events that were most often cited as affecting our lives the most are 9/11 and the 2008 stock market crash. Its not only the events themselves, its the ripples they make into everything else. I was referring to it that way, not in terms of how bad it was.

We might see the real WW3 happen over control of the Arctic region in the next decades. Plus raising sea level could affect urban areas worldwide. In Europe some scientists have proposed building giant dams to enclose the north sea. People in less developed economies won't be so lucky. But I'm sure we have top men working on the problem. Top men.

@Anura - Being Canadian, with the north of our country actually being in the Arctic, I've definintely heard of those concerns. Still, I might go as far as to call what we're in now an actual world war. It's got the mass deaths, soldiers putting their lives on the line, an enemy that multiple countries are fighting (and should be fighting together, if not for a lack of leadership), etc..

I get the analogy. You are right, there will be changes in society affecting everything from work to public health and social security policy. But let’s not forget the blessings, like international trade and essential services still running or lack of bombardments and conscription (in many regions) XD

It's still actually just the beginning of this crisis from a world perspective, though. Even if some countries manage to cool down, it may only be a first wave, as other countries continue to explode, especially the US. I mean, lets say Canada gets no new cases for 3 weeks straight, we still can't go back to normal with our neighbor burning up. Then there's the third world... no telling what the implications will be.

Oh well, that’s life and this has been happening for centuries. Nothing will change that.

I don't want to be right, as I see more bad coming out of the aftermath from this than good, such as the world likely doubling down on the protectionist bent it's been heading towards, and China further solidifying it's place as world leader (it's giving aid to other counties while the US is saying basically that it's every country for its self). Xenophobia via germophobia.
