They sure miss Doa when it was never about costumes in doa1-4, and you played the game like every other fighter. Too bad this gen is desperate for micro transactions.

True. I haven't hopped online in 6 in months but I imagine its practically a ghost town right now compared to DOAX lol.

DOA5U was peak performance lol. There was something always happening in that game, in a good way too.

I cared about costumes before DoA5, that's part of the reason why DOA2U is my favorite (DoA1 for PS1 had a crap ton of costumes too).

They can still go back in play them, and there's always the chance of rereleases. They just missed all the community moments I guess, which you'd need a time machine for or just talk to someone who played at the time for their stories, lol.

Eh, DOA2U started the whole focus on "costumes" and made it kind've of synonymous with DOA. I'm sure some people were bummed with how DOA4 had fewer costumes than DOA2U. However, I agree with DB, DOA5U was arguably the peak for the DOA community. DOA4 was pretty hoppin' fairly early on for quite a bit also.

It's probably easy to forget but PS1's DOA1 had around 15 costumes per each female character and 5 for each male character, and that was before DOA2U, so I'd say it's been a series staple from the beginning. It's a great part of the series if they do it right. I much prefer DOA1's and DOA2's way of doing costumes than the way Tekken and SC do it.

You could look at it as The playstation1 version of doa1 being in some ways an update of the base game. Stages, costumes etc. I never was a fan of that version though. I prefered the 1U version on xbox which is based on the Saturn port.

You make it sound like they are doomed with leprosy and it's impossible for them to experience the golden times for themselves with the right education. I started off with DOA4 competitively and it was considered garbage, but I still was able to appreciate DOA3.1.

Yeah DOA5U were the best times. The community was so active and I'm sure we all remember the Leon and Gen-Fu infinites right? lmao. @Awesmic I mean yeah anyone can buy the previous DOA games and play them but it won't be the same experience. Being active with the community, sharing tech, the hype tournament moments etc. all of that you could only experience within the games lifespan.

And let's face it. KT has been doing everything in their power to screw up DOA6's reputation. Missing lobbies at launch for months, costume unlocking issue, the hair color scandal, etc. Heck, even we thrash the game here on FSD. If someone new to the series decided to join with DOA6, I'm sure its going to be hard for them to continue being interested with all the controversy. Their experience has been tainted.

Oh, hell yes! I always felt that DOA6 is the worst possible introduction to the series and is not a good representation of DOA whatsoever.

Also DOA was always about costumes in some shape or form ever since the Saturn port of DOA1, which is the first fighting game i can think of that offered multiple unlockable, "collectable" outfits for each character. Cheap fetish gear being sold as overpriced post-release content isn't the same thing to me.

One of the things that made DOA5U the right call, was because how everything connected to get people to actually play it. That game's core fighters even had people who tried it out for the first time and stuck around. It was the right timing to everything, gameplay influence, media library was popular, tech was like almost every day etc.

According to Fiend Busa (who unfortunately doesn't play DOA anymore), he stated DOA5U at one point had 44 lobbies. Which was surprising and a record lol. And the reason why it was surprising was because DOA5 vanilla didn't gauge as much people, but probably because vanilla never had core fighters either I guess so there's that.

On top of it, PSN was free net-service for the PS3 back then to play online matches, so you didn't even a subscription for PS just to play online+core fighters together, which further increased DOA playability. Overall, the timing was right for that game, had a solid budget, some key developers from VF helped since vanilla etc., Leon infinite, Gen Fu infinite, events were good (TFC) and so on.
