I did it with my first ever character on the Xbox version (when I had an Xbox 360) and hit level 700 something. Still fucking died a ridiculous number of times. Loool

I did it way into the game and nothing killed me until the final boss. Cheesy ass boss unless you hide behind pillars.

Until you get to a much later part of the game you shouldn't worry about Humanity. If you try to accumulate it early game you'll find yourself getting frustrated whenever you die and can't regain your lost souls/humanity by dying again. Focus on getting yourself to a confident level of play with a good equipment set before trying to go the extra miles to get all the goodies.
You'll automatically get some by beating bosses and by helping other players by leaving a summoning sign and successfully killing a boss in another player's world when summoned.

Easiest way I can think of farming it is part of the end game and in the dlc, so again don't worry about it.

So you get an idea I was about 70 hours into the game before I was comfortable enough just losing souls by dying twice and began to experiment with Humanity stuff. A couple hundred hours later it doesn't really phase me, even in DS2. DS2 irks me with it's "humanity" system because of it's limited item/spawn system and how it damn near forces you to progress through NGs (farming exists but not nearly as much as it previously did).

XZero has the right idea.

BTW: Good news if you plan to jump in DS2 after 1: There's no more humanities! Yay!
Of course, the way to become human is much rarer and you have only 50% health as a Hollow, but there are ways to circumvent it. ;)

If you're getting to 50% there's a problem...even with the Ring of Binding keeping you at 80% at least you're still likely dying a ton. Also I just use the Ring of Life Protection and repair it when I die. Permanent human state. And you can farm the dogs to get human effigies in large quantities too if you don't want to use the ring.

I use the Ring of Binding and thus am perpetually at 75-80% max health. I considering using the Life Protection Ring, but honestly, I'm such a whore for my souls I don't want to waste 6,000 every time I die.
Honestly, I've only used a Human Effigy once to test something. I've been playing the whole game as a Hollow and have not really encountered any problems that have made me want to waste my Effigies.

It's only 3,000 to repair actually, unless you're talking about equipping the second one at the same time and you plan on dying twice in a row. I die somewhat frequently as a Sorcerer with low armor and HP. I'm something like SL 72 and less than 1k HP still haha.

As for the effigies, I plan on burning a few (literally) when I go through the Belfry areas to avoid getting invaded constantly.

You could always just disconnect from the internet like I do when I really don't want to deal with invasions.

I'm playing on PC and don't feel like disabling everything else I do on my computer haha. I'm in that covenant that has blue souls join to protect me from invaders anyway so I'm usually good. Burning effigies will work to stop invasions too but also stops me from summoning people to help with bosses. Having someone to draw a boss' attention is key for me in some battles. Most I solo but a couple are a pain in the ass because of how fast they close on me. Can't really cast when they rush down.

I totally cheesed the Pursuer with the ballista though. Didn't even feel bad.

The Pursuer is the only boss thus far I had to look online to figure out a strategy to defeat him. Low and behold, it was the ballista trick. Fighting that guy conventionally is bullshit, especially that early in the game.

And guess what? Like all annoying game bosses you'll have to fight the Pursuer twice

Actually, up to three times. The second time is in the room where you fought the Old Iron King next to the giant furnace. Kill him before his boss fight then yeah, only twice.

Too bad Yearn doesn't work on bosses. It's absolutely HILARIOUS to use against most mobs. There are some human enemies that ignore it but anything close to a monster follows it like a kitten chasing a laser pointer.

Wait, what? The two that I've gotten are at the end of the Forest of the Fallen Giants and than the one for re-visting the Smelter Demon room in the Iron Keep. Are you saying there's another one in the Old Iron King boss fight, as well?

I'm not counting the initial ledge fight in the Forest since he retreats.

Yeah, Smelter Demon. My bad. I mix the two up for some reason.

Probably because the Smelter Demon is way harder and should have been the final boss fight for the Keep, lol.

By the way, what's a good weight load percentage to stay under? I've been trying to stay under 70% as I notice anything higher really slugs down my roll. But should I be aiming for even lower?
