And that is where you are wrong as well, i am one of the many people that enjoy what dark souls is mechanically. Yeah, it is not a deep system by any means, but it is a fun, contained and varied system that allows for many different and fun builds that change how you play the game completely and allow you to approach situations in many ways.
The controls work for that, the stamina system, the stats, the upgrade paths, is just so nice.
Its got two playstyles... Ranged & Close Quarters. The "Builds" are a Fantasy Feature. Entertaining if you're the type of person who likes to play Make Believe. In reality they are merely numbers.... this isn't necessarily specific to Dark Souls... RPGs are always lacking from a gameplay standpoint. Mind you this is a genre that stubbornly refuses to let go of its Pen & Paper Heritage.
Even Bastion has way more Mechanical Variety than Dark Souls because they didn't decide to focus so much attention on Stats and Levelling Up.
