DLC Costumes, a big ripoff?

They bragged about how DOA5U will have a total of 231 costumes, more than any DOA ever to get players to buy, but they forgot to mention most of the costumes will be DLC. If you don't want to to use DOA5 vanilla costumes plus that 1 extra costume they gave characters (two if you play a female lol), be prepared to spend more money. At least 30-40 costumes are going to be DLC.. Most of them for the chicks. Money hungry bastards; its no wonder why this game will never have a customization mode, it won't make them a dime. To them = Profit > Enjoyable game for both casual and competitive players

The truth has set you free! It's possible that a lot of these costumes were made on the side of game development. I mean it's a joke at how easy it is to recolor 3D models.

Or they could have put them all on disc and then announced that they didn't recoup their investment in DOA5/5U and will therefore not be making further games in the series. Get it into your heads that this shit cost money to make.

Also, this topic has been discussed to death before on SRK except that we had players who actually worked in the industry come in and tell us that shit really was expensive to make.

500K? for DOA I find that highly unlikely given that they gave out a boatload of costumes on DOA3 withthe booster disk.
Made a mistake, searched the thread again. The cost for SWBF2, was around $175k per reskin. The $500k was a figure for a different thing, I believe it may have been the cost per character in SFIV.

Still, if we take that figure, 175,000 multiplied by 231means $40,425,000 total budget for costumes.

by any chance do you know how long it takes one artist to make onr costume? Or the process of making one?

Its just hard to imagine even 175K for that.

At the end of the day DLC is just added visual frills for less than the cost of a latte at starbucks. I know tecmo isnt exactly the largest game studio out there like something run by microsoft so I really dont mind passing them on a few bucks since it will mean I get more costumes.

I play only one character and usually only one game (DOA5U) so things can get a bit bland after a bit and DLC does a great deal to keep things fresh.

I will never call DLC outfits a ripoff. Sure I get frustrated by reskins, slightly modified, and straight up bad outfits but no other game even touches DOA outfits. The amount of detail is crazy. I just noticed a couple of days ago on the back of Eliot's cat hoodie underneath the paw it says "Stray Cat". When they go all out they go ALL OUT.

those detail recolors man so hard. No game touches DOA in costumes? It's morso they don't wanna waste funds on one aspect of a game.

recolors have been in the game since day 1, honestly if you dont like it just dont buy it and vote with your wallet.

I doubt a company as small as tecmo would "waste funds" on DLC, rather they put out a product they make and if people like it at the price it is at then they buy it and tecmo makes a profit. They must be making money off DLC, otherwise they wouldn't bother.

My only gripe about DLC is that they make more character specific costumes rather than castwide themed costumes (cheer, racer, bunny, xmas). I'd copmplain about the schoolgirl outfits but Tinas was dope shit ^_^

I already vote with my wallet on recolors broski.:) I should have added how they recycle costumes like the ones you mention that shit is super lazy since it's just copy and paste jobs with edits done to them. I wish we could see the DLC sales.

Costumes are an option, they don't affect the mechanics of the game at all. In order for something to be a ripoff, somebody needs to be charging over the odds for something you desperately need not something you desire.

TK are offering customisation that the fans want at a price that seems to work, otherwise the fans (me included) wouldn't be buying it and TK wouldn't still be trying to sell them to us.

Detailed customisation modes in other games are okay but to be honest they aren't that brilliant and there is a level of monetisation in these games that is becoming more prevalent.

I'm quite happy to pay the prices as long as TK keep throwing out detailed quality costumes and keep supporting this franchise.

I find most dlc overpriced (like mass effect omega/citadel) but I love this game so I bought this dlcs; about doa dlc, doa is not sf or umvc3, doa5 vannila came out with a lot of original and detailed costumes, none of the dlc was in the disk (I call that a complete game), the dlc costumes are not appealing at all to someone like me so it doesnt bother me; so far I only bought the special2 pack (the one with hayate c2 shirtless, leifand doa1 original) and the fighters pack (and this one was because was only 80ms), its just themed pack costumes, nothing more than fan service, sure they are a bit pricey but this kind of costumes would not exist at all if it didnt came out as dlc, and in terms of quality/art the dlc costumes are very poor in contrast to the ones that come with the game.

doa5u is diferent, I find realy stupid that I have dlc looked in my disk, its not even the fact that its in the disk but its in the menu...locked, this is just stupid...its even worst than what capcom did with umvc3 =7 doa5u was the worst re release ever for me, few content for a re release never again

now team ninja needs to relase a free dlc like they did with vannila and give me hayabusa doa3 c1 and all will be forgiven =P I love that costume =D

I agree. Christie's default is really impressive. The snake print on it is badass, and it has a little cobra head on her back that says "viper" or something like that under it. Plus the outfit just fits her character really well and even has an outfit customization option. It'd be cool if every outfit did like the Mr. Strong ones where you can remove his cape.

There are 231 in the game you can unlock without buying. The original 114 from 5, the new characters' outfits, the dlc from 5 they included free, and the new outfits for the old characters.

People who already have DOA5 already paid $60 for 25 characters and 114 costumes. This time $40 only got you 5 characters and 117 costumes.
