Does anyone know if the environment artists for DOA5 even looked at references when designing their stages?

Looking back at DOA3 and 4...

Those looked photorealistic back in the day and still look great

But then there's DOA5...

The colors and saturation are just gross...

For the next game I really want them to go back and re-examine what made the old ones so beautiful.

Though DOA3 & DOA4's character models look like ass compared to DOA5's character models. But I will agree that DOA3 & DOA4 had much better stage designs. In the case of the DOA5U Forest, TN wanted it to look more vibrant than the original. Also, Primal doesn't look half-bad visually.

Those mentions from older games bring back memories.
Points taken on this game's stages. I find them impressive for the most part. Overly dark ones can be problematic for fighters blending in like Ryu's fiend one. I think it's fiend, I'm not familiar w/recent NG games.
And white outfits on the snow stage. But characters are bigger than 2D ones, where even projectiles can blend w/background, being a problem.

To give some love to DOA5 stages, I will mention some:

To be honest, I don't think DOA5 stages are bad at all. Some of them are pretty good for me.

I've been searching for this thread. DOA5U is my first game but I did my research and I agree that the past stages blow the new ones out of the water.

My favourite stages are:
Demon's Church
Dragon Hills
Aquarium
Desert Wasteland
Lost World
Tiger Show lol

Does anybody know if DOA Online is still active? It's nice playing old FGs & as much as people hate on DOA 4 I miss playing that game too.

I played not too much time ago and both the Russian and the Chinese servers were still very populated (even if only during certain timezones)

Looking over this thread, I find a few things funny.

I remember an old thread similar to this back on doacentral during the DOA 4 days. Mostly, people would fondly remember old stages that were not being played at the time. I see the same thing going on here, only now DOA 4 is part of the mix of favorite stages when it never was before.

In fact, back in the day, most of us would look at DOA 4 stages are think "Man, these stages are so tiny and restrictive." or "This stupid stage screws up every juggle" or "partitions are bullshit guessing games" or "moving dangerzones are dumb".

And now there's an entire generation who miss these stages.

I think nostalgia is simply too overpowering a force when deciding these things.

I completely agree with this post, everytime happens always the same: people blame the elements of the current version (overall stages and music in the case of the DoA series) just for missing them and wishing their return when the next game is released.

Most of the people here would believe this impossible, but I'm pretty sure that when DoA6 will be released the same people will ask even for what we got now in the DoA5 series.

This applies to pretty much other games as well. You'll always find people clinging onto the past and wishing that things would be just like the "good old days". It's an annoying trend.

I think that was the point of this thread though. It is meant to include nostalgia. XD My first real DOA game was 4 so none of the stages were sh*tty since I didn't really have anything to compare to. :p

Still want Aerial Gardens though....

hmm....my top 5 stages?

1) DOATECH HQ HK (DOA3.) A stage with 3 different tiers and areas. Awesome. If they bring it back I'd want them to add a 4th area in between street and lab on the ground floor.

2) the vegas strip (DOA4). Just a very pretty stage, and I liked the cars, kept people on their toes.

3) the cherry blossom stage, where you could go down into the canal (DOA4)

4) The snowy cliff where you could fall down to a frozen pond (DOA2U)

5) Lost World (DOA3). Not so much the DOA5 version, but i'll take what I can get.

So many old stages I love.

I think what they needed to do for Last Round was revamp the 5 stages with more stage breaks. Like for Mila's gym, make it so you could break out of the ring and fight throughout the gym, and even be knocked out the front or back doors, to fight in the "back alley" area behind the gym that you fall from the rooftop stage for, or a brand new area in the front, out on the street. Or better yet, remove the fence in the back alley area to combine the two, so its not just a box.

Here's my favorite stages in DOA5:
☆Scramble- I love the stage in its normal calm state, the night setting and slightly hardcore BGM give it somewhat of a dark vibe that I really like.

☆Rapids(Raft Broken)- My favorite location and stage transition in the entire game, the lighting, rainbow, and BGM really set off the drama and epicness of the battle at hand. I honestly try to avoid hitting the opponent over the ledge or near the ledge wall just so we can end the match here, it's so beautiful!

☆Hot zone- The most epic stage in the game imo. I like when you hit the barricade twice and all hell breaks loose and explosions and gunfire start going off without relent. The music also builds up in intensity.

☆Lost World- Basically Rapids(Raft Broken) 2.0, the stage is beautiful and the music coincides with it really well.

☆Azuchi- I love the DOA5 version of the stage, the fact that it uses the upbeat optimistic theme of Hayate on the rooftop and the visible hubris of Asian design on the buildings and the fact that it's set in night time really makes it one of my favorite stages.

1. Aerial Garden (DOA2 Ultimate version)
The atmosphere, the amazing water effects. Looks still better than any of the DOA5/DOA5LR stages.

2. Lorelei (DOA3 version)
So beautiful, enchanting and mysterious. When you know about the location and myth that it is based on, it's even better:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorelei

3. White Storm (DOA2 Ultimate version)
It's so majestic and beautiful, especially the glacier cavern. I also always love snow stages.

4. Aquarium stages (DOA3/DOA2 Ultimate versions)
I loved these. So pretty. :) We really need an aquarium stage in DOA6. When you slam your oponent into the glass it starts to crack and after you did it a second time small water jets splutter into the stage and fill it slowly up at least to the knees. (The glass of course doesn't crack completely, so the fish aren't hurt. :()

5. Beach stages (DOA3/DOA2 Ultimate versions)
Vacation at home. :) Unfortunately I didn't like the DOA5/DOA5LR beach stages at all. The ones in older games were much more picturesque.

Lol, just DOA3 and DOA2 Ultimate stages... These two games are my favorites for a reason...
