Well except for Mai players/mains from the KOF community like GDH. Aside from him who I know has mained Mai for a long time and was dreaming of this happening for a long time, the only other people are just several DOA FSD guys like me who either have or haven't ever heard of her. I knew of her but haven't actually gotten to play her at all before the KOFXIV demo. XD But still in general, TN has done a pretty mediocre job at actually promoting her, at least in the west. Plus there's no new stage or anything to really hype her, all that's coming alongside her are those three bogus KOF costumes for only 6 girls...

Yeah, like even that video I posted of her recent game play wasn't anything new, we already seen all that at this point. I think the hype and excitement will increase the closer her release date gets, we already seen all her costumes and what she can do, all that's left is to sample the cake for ourselves.

You sure? Naotora was badly promoted too but when arcade footage if her was released days before her release and when the patch was being sent out a lot of people were hype and whatnot including myself. But TBH the major hype was when she was shown at the DOA festival stream, god that stream was so good....I had a lot of fun chatting with everyone and staying up for 3-4 hours just watching everything.

I get your point but the hype your talking about mostly only applies to the people ALREADY playing last round, as of now, the limited promotion Mai is getting means that the chances of her bringing in new players to doa is unlikely since TN and KT arent really making that much of an effort to get the word out of her appearance. When Mai was first announced during the fest, a lot of game news sites mentioned it (do a google search and see what I mean) but now, the news has largely been forgotten.

I again wouldn't say that. While yes, Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo should go advertise Mai more, I wouldn't 100% that would spread more awareness. To be fair, there is people who have watched and are hyped for it(see Max's Mai Combo Video andThe DOA SRK topic), but I don't think they are looking for it themselves either...

Not helped that the websites themselves aren't building up hype either(Eventhubs, seriously, I rarely ever see DOA, Skullgirls or any other non huge FG news despite how they'll grab news for Street Fighter about ANYTHING) so it's just as much on them, especially when they aren't fully based with corporations in mind.

EDIT: Checked Eventhubs and they did another article on DOA5LR Mai again...I take my words back on them atleast.

Bringing in Mai Shiranui does not automatically mean it will bring new players, it's to bring in standard audiences but won't exactly mean bring the players from the games they play from, it will bring some but not as big as one makes it out to be. It's a partnership. A contract. Ways to increase business. If you guys thought the partnership was to "only" bring new players outside of DOA then damn, put on that space suit and come back to Earth from whatever planet you were out there scavenging from because this is simply hilarious. Some of you are extremely gullible and naive to just believe what your mind wants you to believe.

Team NINJA developed a partnership with SEGA and Square Enix for 8+ years. The arcade business (which won't die until it actually dies or gets outclassed by the era of mobile gaming and pachinko slot machines, which is still a long time from now) along with Square's Dissidia to help develop it's game format. TN does not always revolve around the game in it's entirety here, they have other shit to do. KOF partnership was just the start of things here, so are some of you basing this off of FSD status or something? you should see FB and twitter, Mai literally amassed over 4.4k in tweets and rising. It's talked about, just not in the manner we are all speaking of here.

There can be other factors involved here, they simply may not have the power to constantly control what to put out or showcase. I mean really people, it's a sub company under KOEI Tecmo so what do some of you expect? like what, you expect them to simply go over to the boss and just say "Listen here boss, we want to put out 20 more Mai videos in the week before her actual release because one individual said so."....really now....Life isn't sparkles and rainbows here. Might as well let Mr. Wah explain it to you guys but Team NINJA does not always revolve around DOA.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious that it was never going to bring in new players in droves(let's be honest, how many people from the SF series is really going to hop into Tekken 7 because of Akuma? Or if the Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur 4 really mattered that hard in getting more people to play the games?), but there was the illusion of it man!

You just ripped off wings from an angel, I hope you are happy.

A lot of the kof folks from what I've seen are actually pretty happy with the way Mai is looking in doa, they lament the way she looks in kof in comparison haha.

True. I have also seen people who do want to try out DOA5LR if only because of Mai. So it's not exactly going to be bringing in a fuckton of people, but there will be newcomers atleast.

I think you might be surprised by how much a guest character can increase sells. Much more people than what you think bought SC4 because Star Wars characters or SC5 to play Ezio. MKX released same number of guests characters than MK characters as DLC, because they know what sells since they released Freddy Krugger as DLC for Mk9. And I'm sure a lot of people will buy Tekken7 just to play Akuma.

But most of these players are casual ones who don't talk in forums, don't participate in tournaments and don't belong to any fanbase community.

It works the other way as well; I personally never played VF until I tried (and really liked) playing Sarah and while I dont play it that much, I would still be interested in playing future games. The same with Mai; if I end up liking her, I may consider trying out her home games.

The cross promotion is very obviously one goal of having a guest character.

Of course, cross stuff works in both ways. Some KOF players will approach to DOA and some DOA players will approach to KOF.

It's not just having guest characters here for new players to try the character. It's good business and they will do it again in DOA6/7/8/9/10/11/12 etc etc.

You expect a Star Wars movie based fan to immediately play SC and suddenly become a top player? it doesn't work like that. You play the game and you learn from it just like any other game. Having guest characters brought over for other players to try the game is a reason but not a "major" reason. Lots of KOF Mai mains will try her...........half of them will return to their own game. You see how probable logic works? - Overall, it is a wise decision to include guest characters period. It does two things at once instead of one from a standard-made character by TN.

They have a contract with Sega for the remaining 4+ years because of promotional gains from them (Sega developed an arcade cabinet that allows you to play Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Virtua Fighter, Skull Girls, Dengeki Bunko, DOA5LR all within that same cabinet.) and they get revenue shares in return. Do you remember that video of Hayashi playing Nyotengu in that programming location with the two maids and the loud obnoxious guy with the glasses? that was a Sega talk show via NicoNico. Promotional means and TN isn't going to let that one go, even Namco is contract with Sega for that...and you want to know why? here's why:
