lronically people in both the west and east hated the more dark/western friendly take of early DoA 5.
- Several dark/urban stages. Even something out of a CoD game lol.
- little sex appeal despite the series tradition
- the two new characters were pure west appeal with a nearly bald Canadian who has tatoos/wears a hoody that worked at a rig and a tomboy plain looking MMA American fighter who wears either MMA gear/workout clothes or casual clothes that showed little skin.
- even had rap/hip hop as the theme song lol
Only few positives I can think of at the time was people liked the better gameplay compared to DoA 4 and the transition from anime doll to a more realistic character aesthetic only because it can make the girls more sexy/cute.
That clearly didn't go well for them [in terms of software sales or reviews] so post game they changed directions and that appealed more favorably to them. If anyone is to blame it's that we didn't make early DoA 5 a success for what it gave besides the sexy outfits. At that point they would have either pulled the plug of DoA entirely [kind of like Virtua Fighter] or try to salvage. They chose the latter.
Also you would have to be border insane optimistic of you think removing the sexy focus would have resulted to a mass spike of interest in the series that it would be SF/Tekken level when that didn't work out at all during the alpha. The people who were interested in SF/Tekken are not gonna play DoA even if all the sexy is removed. They will largely still play SF/Tekken because guess what? DoA is a very different kind of fighter to begin with. All the radical changes is only gonna accomplish is alienating your longterm fanbase and KT/TN realized this through data and made the necessary adjustments as a business which is chug out as many DlC costumes as they can because they realize the majority of their fanbase will buy and continue to buy [whether at a few dollars or $90+ for a season pass] various sexy/cute outfits for the female characters.
Ironic how people keep saying Itagaki would have saved DoA 5 when it's Itagaki's fault to begin with that they can't change the DoA image if they tried [which they did] because of the permanent image the series has painted themselves as with four other sexy DoA games and two Xtreme games that just elevated things.
