Wow. That sounds awful. Is this a glitch, or does it appear to be intentional?
It's intentional.
Yep. An intentionally stupid design decision on Nintendo's part.

What the fuck? You can't even create different profiles to assign custom controls to, like you could in Brawl?
You can still do that. The issue is that you can't set the control profiles as your default control scheme. Which means you'll have to switch to that profile manually every single time you go to a character select screen. Event Mode included. It started off as a minor annoyance, but it became more annoying than I hoped.

Every time you go to a mode you have to select it again. Back out to the menu to check an unlock before going back to the same mode? Re-select!

So damn dumb. Netcode isn't the miracle people are making it out to be either; not even in 1v1. I do really like the game but there are some massive rose-tinted goggles getting passed around. Smash Tour is awful btw.

Twitch stream of my scrub play against @VirtuaKazama last night. Sorry I'm bad with little Mac as I'm still trying to understand the throw and dodge system. I also had to readjust back to the GC controller. Late in the stream the video glitches up twice temporarily due to some issue when hot plugging a GC controller into the adapter.

Nintendo games always get overhyped... I remember how badly Skyward Sword sucked and I'm still angry at being deceived by all the MK8 reviews. It was barely fun even in local mp, a far cry from MK Wii. So I'm not believing anything I read about this game online, just waiting on a friend to buy it first

What do you guys mean by selecting the controls? Do you mean customizing your button inputs or selection of controller? Sounds like a pretty big deal if true, I use the default layout but I know it'd be a huge annoyance for a lot of people.

You can customize them on a per controller basis and save them to a profile. The problem is you can't set a default profile, so you have to go in and select that profile every single time you enter a mode, even if it's one you were already in during that gameplay session. It's beyond stupid.

How was that any different from the previous games?

Smash 3DS, the other half of this game, allows that very thing. Don't defend Nintendo or Namco because they also previously made stupid decisions.

I agree the game has it's cons that game reviewers either look the other way about or say something along the lines of "well I don't care about that anyway" (ex: GameXPlain when discussing online mode?!) Smash fans are of course biased. XD Unfortunately I can only speak from an offline experience since I have issues with my netcode and can basically only play offline at the moment.

First off, I'm a sucker for eye candy and hot d@mn does this game look great in HD. Maybe I'm just so used to the 3DS version that anything is an upgrade but the characters and stages look so much better than I thought they would (YT tends to do that XD). The soundtrack is great as well and is very extensive.
Here's some screenshots (and they actually look like this when you play the game):

In terms of actual gameplay, it's still a smash game (which is a good thing imo). If you like smash games you will like this. If not, well I'm not sure if this one can change your mind. Nothing revolutionary and even the 8 player smash that people are hyping about can only be played offline so there will be only rare instances when I can even play that mode with 7 other players at the same time. But everything plays the way it should and feels SO much better than the 3DS version.

In terms of modes, plenty of ones to choose from (except Smash Tour which is a clusterf*ck and I avoid it like the plague) that will help keep the replay value high. Very disappointed there is no story mode or equivalent like in Brawl. I understand it must have been time-consuming but it payed off and was a lot of fun to play co-op. There are no side scrollers in this version where you can slaughter hundreds of enemies (gets a big thumbs down from me). In the 3DS version they have Smash Run which is pretty much 5 minutes of Brawl's side scroller and it was replaced unfortunately in the wii u version with that god-awful mario party ripoff (did I say I avoided that mode?).

So that's just some of my comments, I don't think it deserves a 9.8/10 especially if online mode is running into problems like ppl are saying but it's a good game and a lot more fun to play with friends.

Okay, finally got a chance to play Smash 4 on a friend's Wii U last night.

Regarding the need to switch to your profile every time you enter a new character select screen; yes, this is true. However this was also true for Brawl (and naturally, Project M as well).

Regarding having to switch to your profile after every match; this was not true in my case. We'd pick our profiles, select our characters, and start the match. After the match was over and we were brought back to the character select screen, our profiles would still be set.

This was just for competitive versus play. We didn't play any of the other modes, like Event Match or Smash Tour, but I have no interest in anything other than competitive versus play, so I couldn't care less about how the rest of that stuff works, anyway.

Yes, I believe the complaint is it doesn't save when you change modes like go to Event Match or Smash Tour.

So how's the netcode for you folks, compared to other fighters. DOA tier? Tekken tier?
I've been playing with friends so far. We've been getting buttery smooth matches so far. Except with one of my friends who live in a different country. It's definitely far from DoA-tier, but not at all very perfect. I can't say for sure with the ethernet cable since I don't have one.

I'm assuming this is 1 on 1? I hear a lot about lag but it's probably people doing 4 player right?
