The Art Style and Graphics Discussion

If we're talking graphics as in "nice and effective to look at while you're playing it," I think DOA6 is actually pretty far ahead regarding quality.
Thanks to its god-awful lighting, DOA6 is literally the second-worst-looking fighter on current gen consoles. When it's running at 60 FPS, it's only succeeding in making my eyes bleed sixty times every second.

Props to MvC:I for somehow being even uglier.

Ill have to strongly disagree with you on that. Tekken and SC, while fun to play look bad when next DOA. And any other fighter this gen, KOF, SFV, KI, etc. dont hold a torch to DOA. DOA6 has its problems sure, but its mad disrespectful to say any fighter other than what NRS put out this gen looks better graphically then DOA.
I think it's hard to compare MK11 and DOA6 with just still images. MK11 definitely has more resolution and detail, but I think that only makes it look shiny in still images. Mortal Kombat animation is so janky and stiff, and I find the faces creepy. If we're talking graphics as in "nice and effective to look at while you're playing it," I think DOA6 is actually pretty far ahead regarding quality. It's not always about money and resources that makes something look nice.
I'd still say DOA plays better than MK, but NRS killed it in graphics. Im a big fan of both games, so Im fine with DOA being the 2nd best looking Fighter this gen. Its very impressive considering TN had less to work with then a studio like NRS.

What an interesting, coherent art style...

(The player is abysmal, be warned, lol.)

Maybe not to everyone's taste, but stylistically/artistically such a big step up from KOF14, which was going for no real style at all, other than maybe a sterile plastic look?

oh hey it's SF4 except not ugly as si---
>every blonde character has banana hair
i take that back

speaking of coherent, it would be more coherent if the character portraits didn't use that cel shading and went with V/Sen's style. and uh, nakoruru looks like a corpse.

not feeling the glowy particle effects at all however.

the UI is great art-wise but most of the transitions and animations look very crude. both the main menu and character select screens are oddly static and have a flash game feel to them. and then you have the neon green, solid-colored health bar. it's fine if they just rushed a functional one out for the demo, but i hope it's more polished in the final game. it would be unfortunate to see all that art go to waste.

I honestly think Mortal Kombat 11 is not just the most beautiful fighting game of this generation but also one of the most beautiful games of this generation in general. Look at these character models, the animations, the lighting, the super detailed and atmospheric stage backgrounds, and all that in solid 60fps. The WB Games Youtube channel offers the least compressed MK11 trailers on Youtube. Set the new Kitana and D'Vorah gameplay trailer to 1080p and to 0.25 speed and enjoy the beauty.

Not a fan of MK-style controls and gameplay and not a big DC fan but when I saw the beautifully-made characters of Injustice 2, it became my sole reason to buy the game. I ended up enjoying it.

NetherRealm Studios sure know how to create lifelike characters.

i think the artstyle change was a good thing. it has a way less "asset flip indie porn game in unity" vibe than before tbh

the series was on a million platforms over the years lol. not much to say about the tech as it's very much a B-rated series throughout its life like, say, EDF.
it used to have the same uncanny semi-realistic sameface style as whatever the hell that idol game those devs just pushed out. realism is difficult to get right technically and the last time someone didn't completely suck at it was L.A. Noire, so i think a budget studio shouldn't have any business with it at all.
