Just on DOA Dimensions, is it worth grabbing a 3DS for you reckon? How does it deliver in terms of game modes, costume variety, characters etc? & is Tengu actually playable or just a boss? I wouldn't mind grabbing this game whenever i decide to splash out for a 3DS eventually just to add to my admittedly shite DoA collection which consists only of DoA5U, DoA3, DoAU & DoA4 haha. Cheers,
First of all I have the game but not a console for playing it, anyway I can say you the info that I know about it
DoA Dimensions is definitely the link between DoA4 (and partiall the old games) and DoA5, so you will notice as many things seems just to foreshadow the passage from these 2 games. Something was lost, other was added.
The
characters available are the strenght point of DoA Dimensions, that allow you to play with ALL the canon fighters appeared in the series since DoA1!
So you have the ordinary cast of DoA4 + Raidou, Tengu (TN was able to nerf him even more from DoA4

), Genra (with a moveset partially inspired to Spartan) and Alpha-152. To them are added for the first time even Kasumi Alpha (the clone from DoA2 - finally with the deserved important role in the plot never got in the original game - that use the moveset of Kasumi from DoA2) and the secret character Shiden (father of Kasumi and Hayate, for moveset a clone of Hayate more similar to his DoA3 version).
Of course Spartan and Rio Tachibana are absent being guest characters.
The
game modes available are:
- Chronicle (story based on the DoA5 mode)
- Arcade & Survival (with different courses and difficulties, just as appear in DoA5: by the way the characters and the stages remain the same everytime, differently from DoA5U)
- Free Play (Versus)
- Training (with the introduction of a slighty deep display of technical info related to the moves)
- Showcase (the game give you the possibility to acquire figures different still models of the characters in different poses, and then to place them in your favourite stages, taking photo of them)
- 3D Photo Album (where you can see the photos).
A tutorial for the game is included inside the playing of the chronicle mode, similar to the original DOA5.
About the online, the game should give you the possiblity to play only Single ranked matches, without lobbies (and so without a way to play definitely with the same previous opponent). But I could be partially wrong on this.
Time attack and Team Battle are missing, just as Arcade mode with ending movies from the previous games.
About Chronicle Mode you have to know that basically he talk just about the DOATEC storyline: so the main characters involved will be Hayate, Kasumi, Ayane, Ryu and Helena (the only ones that you will play in the Chonicle mode), Hitomi, Bayman, Christie, Lisa, Kasumi Alpha, Shiden and of course all the bosses. The rest of the cast make just brief appearences. By the way, even if lacking of the funny side stories and altering the previous canon, at least in my opinion TN make a great work, telling the story in a way clear and much more logical compared to DoA1-DoA4.
The
stages are taken from the previous games of the series (of course this doesn't mean that they are all included), with slighty changes (as the addition of tier levels or mixture of different ones) + some nice new arenas. All of them are in the old DoA style, so colorful and irregular arena (on the opposite of DoA5), and of course full of multi tier levels. For seeing the stages, I suggest you to look to the official DoA Dimensions site:
http://teamninja-studio.com/doadimensions/eu/index.html
(The game introduce the possibility to select just an exact tier level of the stage, option implemented even in DoA5).
The
outfits are not so much, but for the majority of the roster (excluded bosses and some unlucky ones) all various and different. The majority are anyway old outfits from the series (again, in parallel with DoA Dimensions wanting be a big remake of it). Sadly a part of them was available as Free DLC released only in particular dates, so currently is impossible to get them if you wasn't able to do it in the past (fans still asking for these outfits to TN...).
For major info about go on DoA Wikia (external to FSD
http://deadoralive.wikia.com/wiki/Dead_or_Alive_Wiki) or look this video
The outfits called "Download "xx" are the DLC ones (that as I said, currenty are unavialable for who didn't download them in the past).
About the
gameplay, the game is basically a porting of DoA4 under that aspect (even if of course were implemented some differences in the moveset of the characters and their properties or in the return of the KO for falling in multi tier stage); I'm not an expert of it so I can't say you technical details, but in general people consider the game pretty similar to the fourth title.
The real big differences IMO are:
- The holds use a 3 points system (as in DoA3) and not the one with 4 points.
- In Tag you can't control both of your characters, but just your main one with the second controlled by a (silly of course) AI. Very likely this for the hardware limits of the 3DS. I also think that Tag is allowed only in arcade, versus and multiplayer (local).
EDIT: Added and fixed some details.
So, Team Ninja posted something about "DOA5UA Fighting Carnival 2014 SUMMER". =)
Maybe it´s another DLC Episode of costumes like the "Halloween" Pack back then.
This should be related to a playing event from what I knew.
