This question might be a bit late, but how do people generally feel about the balance in DOA5U? How big of a gap is there from Tier S to Tier D?

There are some who feel that every MU is 5-5 or 4-6.
There are others who think that the balancing is more "normalized" than that (ie: there are 7-3s and the such).
Then there are those who think that the balancing is absolutely horrible.

It really just depends on who you talk to. It's not directly correlated with skill level, either. There are top players who are in different categories, and lower-level players don't stay in one category either.

It does seem to follow a trend, in my experience, but it's not a "low level player" vs "high level player" separation.

The gap is mostly in valid tools, and their strengths. Gen Fu and Christie have more good tools than Eliot and Ein.

The gap between the highest tiered characters (I.e. GenFu, Christie, Ayane for example) and the lowest tiered characters (I.e. Eliot, Tina and Ein for example) can be fairly large but everyone in between is generally alright for the most part. Comebacks can occur fairly easily in DOA, and to an extent every character is viable. It's just that some characters, *coughsgenfucoughs*, have an easier time controlling the match than others. All things considered I'm mostly satisfied with 5U's balance.

So with DOA5U it's not a case of use S Tier or get ROFL stomped, or anything like that?

Well, I mean, most games aren't like that. I can't really think of a game where bottom tier is actually unplayable.

Mortal Kombat 9. If you're not using Kenshi, Kabal or Cyrax then you may as well GTFO. The game is unbalanced as hell. Which is a shame really, since it's such a fun game. Oh and back in 2009 vanilla Street Fighter IV was pretty dang unbalanced too.

Yeah, I don't really follow MK but I see a fair amount of character variance when I watch streams. As for vanilla SFIV, it's not that bad. There was a lot of dumb tech that wasn't discovered back then which made high tiers seem better than they were. If you go back and apply the stuff from Super and AE to vanilla, it's actually a lot more balanced 'cause the cast gets a lot better overall.

Katsuninken (Japanese champ) has tweeted his DOA5U Tier List:

EDIT: This is not his tier list, just him ranking those who are good at mid range.

SS Hayabusa
S Hayate
A+ Eliot, Bass, Ayane, Lisa
A- Kasumi, Jann Lee, Kokoro, Alpha 152
B+ Ein, Momiji, Helena, Pai, Hitomi
B Mila, Akira, Zack
B- Christie
C+ Tina, Rachel, Rig, Leifang, Brad
C- Bayman, Jacky, Leon, Phase 4
D Sarah, Gen Fu, Marie Rose

I'm just gonna comment on the characters I'm familiar with or have decent MU experience. I like this idea of having a tier list based on specific situations or requirements.

:bass: Surprised to see him so high on this list, but when you look at what he has and his general metagame, it makes sense. Bass has been good at mid-range and I feel like that is more preferable to being at close rang when you don't have the momentum or frame advantage.

:3::3::P:, :3::K:, :6::6::K:, :6::6::P::+::K:, :214::P:, :6::6::P:, :1::P:, :K: are the moves to use at the range and also good for whiff punishment, especially with :3::3::P:. Another upside to his mid-range game is that pretty much everything is safe or has a safe followup. :6::h::+::P: and :6::6::h::+::P: are the longest reaching 6i throw and 16i OH in the game, respectively.

I wouldn't put him that high on the list, but it's flattering to see him high on this list.

:hayate: His range game is really good and he can play keepaway well. His downside is that most of it is punishable. His mid-range crushes are also pretty good. I don't use him, but I have MU experience against this character.

:lisa: Really good at mid range with :3::K:, :236::K:, :236::P: and most of her pokes from BT, especially with BT :4::P::+::K: and BT :6::h::+::P:. When you start mixing her :1::h::+::K::6: and BT mixups and fakiing those, you can actually end up locking someone down and forcing them to stay on the defensive. She has a high potential for mixups at both close range with frame traps and mid to long range.

:rachel: Generally a close-range character, but :6::6::K: and :236::P: do help with getting in. :4::K: is pretty good too with added safety.

:leon: Most people think he's weak at mid range, but :4::6::P:is pretty good at getting in and his :3::3::h::+::P: OH can actually be used at that range. His other tools aren't that great. Him and Rachel play the same game, but differ in terms of tools and damage output.

:marierose: This character is actually rather limited at mid to long range. The only thing she has at that range would be :236::P: and even that is limited and very unsafe. She has to work at close range.

Yeah I checked it out before. They removed the Leon continuous throw and so on with a few Nyotengu changes that somewhat makes little sense with Google's translation.

Probably still updating it perhaps?
There's absolutely no mention of it. I feel like it would have been listed under bug fixes. Probably not going to change.

I hope I'm wrong, though.
