I don't think exploding clothes will do much good for the games reputation. It's also pretty cheesy and unrealistic, clothes rarely ever get ripped in an actual fight. But I suppose it's fine for the SK outfits... that is their whole shtick after all.

As someone who jumped ship on MK for DOA. I don't mind this feature, and I'm glad it's being added. Whether it's just SK costumes, or all of them I am indifferent. If people who don't like the feature, get an option, its technically the best to offer those divided on the opinion.

In the end people who play fighting games... more specifically people who play video games, aren't doing so for the sake of realism. There isn't much realism in DOA, so as a feature it's not taking away from a perceived aspect of realism.

Yeah I understand that doa has never been too concerned with realism. We have teleporting ninja's, cyborgs Tengu, people being thrown off skyscrapers and crushed by a giant Buddha but I see a difference between that kind of suspension of belief and someone's pants exploding off of their body as the result of a punch.
Maybe if it was just knees and elbows getting a bit scuffed from being knocked down multiple times, then I could get on board... but knowing TN it will look a little something like...

Quite true, you brought up a the keywords I thought about using earlier 'suspension of disbelief'. The challenge is that this varies drastically for everyone. Some people want 'High level fantasy' while others want 'Seemingly plausible with some fiction mixed in'. Accomplishing both views simultaneously is nigh impossible since the suspension of disbelief is likely to be unrelated for the end consumer.

I guess we'll find out within in the next couple of weeks. Since based on the early image, TN didn't change anyone's anatomy to match SK, it's possible that's still on par with the existing dirt / water / sweat levels which is 'within reason'. MK seemed to do it fairly well given how many bladed weapons were thrown about. DOA's leading context would likely be Critical Busts, Power Blows and environment hits.

I would be fine with this idea if it was applied to every character, and if it was done right. But if it's only going to be for ogling purposes for specific costumes I'd rather not have it.

I would ld prefer it to be saved til do6

I've seen this argument multiple times, I don't see how this makes a difference especially since DOA6 is along way out from TN's suggestions.

If anything doing a trial run on this is a better concept. It tests whether or not it's even popular. If it fails people who don't like it, won't have to see it in DOA6. If it does well, TN will do a better job integrating it in a sequel.

DOA5 is a highly honed game, arguments can be made all day long on balance changes, but there is little else the game can receive without a character roster upheaval or new mechanic system. With a lot of gripes about DOA's current image, a feature like this is not enough to warrant a sequel, if anything it will become a major marketing bullet point just like the soft engine was for DOA5LR. So at least this way the feature has a stealth sneak in and will be less pronounced in a sequel if people are already used to it.

Haha, hard to see them make a feature like this look good considering their idea of a see through shirt is painting a bra on the shirt texture itself.

I hope it only happens during cut scene attacks, not constantly from jabs, for example.

Or maybe just at health threshholds like when meter starts glowing

I like battle damage in fighters but I know this won't be so much tears as convenient stripping like in actual SK.

Like others here, as long as it's completely optional and ONLY for the Senran costumes, I say "Ehh" for now. but a full blown option for ALL costumes? Nahh

It would make sense if they'll do ehm..multilayered costumes. Cool! Not only multitier stages, but now clothes!

edit:

maybe, smth like concept of duality: "surface" costume should be strongly different from "inner" one. So it would be like Mask and Persona beneath.

It could be a nice visual effect to coincide with the water and dirt effects already present in DOA5. But I'd rather see it done right, which would mean having costumes designed from the beginning to use whatever destructibility they implement, definitely not something haphazardly stuck to existing outfits. So while that doesn't mandate DOA6, it would be a cleaner transition than forcing into current LR. Like others have said, using the Senran outfits to test the theory wouldn't be out of line.

I just hope this is only for SK costumes and then we don't see something like that again in the future. But if that happens, I just want it to be optional. I always hated how SC4 & SC5 don't have the option to disable clothes destruction.

You do realize that costume destruction doesn't necessarily mean sexualization right? Dragon Ball Z did it, Mortal Kombat 9 did it, Soul Calibur did it, and other games have done it.
You'd have a point... IF this wasn't a game that predominantly uses "Sexy", "Naughty" and other terms as part of their marketing, includes costumes like ribbons, bikinis, toilet paper and FUCKING TOWELS, and features a newly revamped boob system. Besides, the creator of the game thinks it's softcore porn with a fighting game on the side as opposed to being the main feature.

So just because it doesn't mean that will be the case in other games doesn't mean the same it will be true for this. In fact, the image Team Ninja wants to promote about this game makes it absolutely certain this will be another addition to the sex, which is the exact OPPOSITE of what this game needs right now.
