Helena's needed improvements

You know, all I here about is how Helena ain't that good anymore, but shit man, all I see are Helena beasts online, especially up in the high leaderboards. She's like the only one truly rocking the tech ground game, and she gives me hella trouble. Maybe I suck.

I know right. But most Helena player i have seen are veterans, who have been playing for years.

She has like this oldschool Genfu thing about here where she's always hitting you and you're always trying to counter like an idiot getting hit and forced up and grabbed and god it's awful! And is it just me or does a good ole fashion low OH just not work on this bitch anymore? Her 6p coming out of Bokuno stance is like "nah son I don't follow any rules," BAM! In my face every time. Countering it seems hard too for some reason. Anyways lmao. /end rant.

I would think that you could low OH her 6P but if I am correct her 6P doesn't high crush so she might not be counted as being low. I'll have a look.

Oh and don't worry about losing to her, she ain't as bad as people make her out to be. Even though she has some serious fundamental problems.

I think that Helena is fine (Although my opinion doesn't really count, haha) the way she is. Could be better, but not extremely bad like everyone says. All you need is hard work and dedication. :D

These are the improvements that Helena needs:

any string ending in 6,6+P should be -5 on block as it was in all other DOAs, instead of -8 (making it unsafe)

pp4+p2+P - the final hit should be 0 on normal hit*

8+pp2+P - the first two hits should cause a normal stun instead of forcing the opponent out of a stun. The last hit should be 0 on normal hit*

backfacing 2+p should be 0 on normal hit*

df+p6+pp - the second hit should stun instead of forcing the opponent out of a stun. The same goes for just plain 6+p.


*the last hit in all these moves is effectively the same move. This move should stun like it did in DOA2 and 3 on counter hit. Similar to Helena's 2+K from bokuho stance.

these improvements were made with the idea in mind of improving moves already in existence, instead of creating new moves. Also, if Team Ninja were to update the game with improvements, the the changes to moves listed above would not effect the way combos are carried out once the opponent is airborne, making the changes easier to implement.

A low hitting string while in BKO, I feel like she's too predictable in that stance.
Her 7P should come out faster, it feels pretty useless right now.
A quick backturn that doesn't involve a punch or kick.
A standing combo throw, or a better throw to punish wiffed counters.
Two low (or no) damage advanced holds, one that leaves her in BKO, and one that turns her back to her opponent.
She needs at least one more guard break move, she has far too few compared to most of the rest of the cast.

I haven't had enough competition to do anything comprehensive. Right now she has enough disadvantage where any character that excels in defense gives her a ton of problems.

EDIT: I started it up. It'll mostly be theory fighting, but I'm using the guide as reference. If anyone wants to help feel free to.

I almost always win with Helena. In fact, the only match where I was "close" to beating Something Unique was with her but the facts are there. She's lacking in EVERYTHING, she's bottom tier and no ones denial will change that.

Yeah. Honestly, I win a lot with her, but that's got so much to do with people not knowing exactly what she does and allowing me to get away with all kinds of things I probably shouldn't. Even people who clearly have played more than me.

Sometimes I just spam 9K and juggle them to death. It's funny and we should take advantage of the situation until tier lists start to show up with her at the very bottom.

Same here. I've only lost once with Helena both online and offline, but I'm pretty sure this just falls in line with what Mamba was saying in his most recent blog post. People don't really know how to fight her yet and nobody's really throw punishing her. Until our opponents start taking advantage of that she's going to seem strong to a lot of people even though we know she's lacking.

I've found only FOUR safe strings on her and they all end with the 3-in-1. If a string ends with anything else, punish her with a strong grab because she's not only unsafe, but EXTREMELY unsafe at -9, -10 and even -11. Tina can realistically punish Helena with a 41236T and Busa can with an Izuna Otoshi. If she manages to stun you, chances are she'll use a mid punch, so hold mid punch and you have a very good chance of beating her. She's also extremely slow for me. I trade better with Tina and Busa than I do with Hele.

Nooooooooooooo. I already am reduced to 4 safe strings, don't tell them about the mid-punch!

Ah, well. It was pretty obvious anyway.

But, seriously, the number of times I feel like "oh, please don't counter the extremely obvious mid-punch coming through!" But, honestly, I tend to fight against people who, upon seeing BKO, will instantly hold low, which of course is just dumb. So I can get away with it.

Last time, my best friend and I played DOA5, and he was a bit disappointed with his own skills :

BFF : "Crap, I suck with Rig, you always beat me with Helena, is she Top Tier or what?".
Me : Stop complaining, Helena is not that good to be honest.
BFF : How is that possible, she is too impredictable blablablah!
Me : Well she only has mid punches to start with and and hmmm..
BFF : Whaaat ?
Me : Ermm.. no.. nothing. :confused:
BFF : Nooo you said something interesting, I want to know!
Me : *Why did I say that?*
