It's not pointless since generally speaking it's "new" characters regardless of where they are from in gaming. The issue with individual players is that they choose not to accept that. Also there is a huge difference between crossover meanings and guest characters.
- "Crossovers" in a general sense is mashing up one or more series into a standalone new game. That is "not" what DOA or MK is doing in particular. << Neutral with crossovers, it's alright but not a big fan of it. (Crossovers is something like Capcom vs SNK 2 , Project X Zone, Marvel vs Capcom 3 or the terrible MK vs DC. These are crossovers.)
- "Guest" characters is adding characters from another series into the original games on where it's added to fit the format on how the game is already is. Which is why VF characters fit perfectly in DOA because they were rescratched into the game concept with added DOA5 body models, the only difference with the VF characters is the terrible voice adding & rights holding. Characters like Freddy, Jason, Predator and now Alien were never exactly added into a fighting game before, so technically speaking (Whether you choose to believe it or not) they are brand new characters. "Guest" characters are fine and dandy because it's new, as long as they keep true to the word on how they originally play but fit the game. Bad guest characters for example, is characters like Yoda in SCIV. A pick that was expecting more fans to be drawn in but unaware that causes more harm than good due to size. In other words, they picked the wrong one. Actually to be fair, even original characters can be added into the game wrong just like a guest character which either is not common, it's all dependent on the devs with how much time they put into them.
People can complain about it all they want, guest characters will be in future games for the lifetime due to the hype and business standpoint, so if it makes them money and develop more company relationships then keep doing it. Now don't get me wrong, Alien/Xenamorph is actually pointless along with Leatherface that was unexpected but not the character people wanted, this I can truly understand from people..but the issue here is Ed Boon and the NRS choosing with who they want to leave out, which can be disappointing.
