Actually, there still are people online, at least on PSN. Late october, I played quite a few people online, probably over 15 different people in 15 different matches.

Still an amazing game as is. Also, there's an extra mode that can be unlocked when all the DLC is acquired. It's basically a wide variety of gauntlet battles surrounding a specific theme. Like Halloween and a bunch of miscellaneous stuff. You can get a good challenge out of the fights and see a bunch of the wacky costumes that's possible. It's really fun XD
For instance, my Akira has costumes that make him look like Ryo Hazuki, Mario, and even Mahandis Ghandi (taken from an online Akira I ran into). Even one of my friends turned Lau into Master Asia. The customization feature would be perfect if it weren't for the bogus point system limiting my options.

You talk about the "Special sparring mode" right? And yes, it's a shame that the customization of the characters meets anyway some limits, but seems however funny.
Just some things... I will love some Doa DLC discounted me too (probably I will buy the Santa outfits in these days)

Given how niche the franchise is, combined with its time of release, I don't expect the Player Match lobbies to be very active. Rank may still have a good amount, but probably not as much as it used to. The game has been going up on sale on and off at very affordable prices, so online activity is probably getting a slight surge.
It's been a while since I last played, so maybe I should head online and start an open lobby whenever you feel like it : P
