Well, for the USers in FSD, but for Cakucks it was last month, lol. Although several countries celebrate their own version of it, they all have different dates.

But yeah, have a great Turkey Day Awesmic and the rest of you in the US. :D Get yourselves some sweet potato casserole (I've made it a few times now.. great stuff!)

When people say DOA is an anime game, what do they mean by that?

That said, I don't think it's right to apply the label of anime to some Japanese games and not others. It shouldn't be a label at all for games, imo, unless a game is literally based on an anime series. Games arent anime. In Japan, you could say some games contain anime (animations, like cut scenes), but it's not a style.

@inochinagi In other words, Japanese games are, not a style of anime, but an influence by and from anime. DOA is technically in the category. Art-wise, there are anime influence prior to 5, following a "realistic" look that Street Fighter did in 1-2 and 6 (Alpha/Zero, 3, EX and 5 have anime looks, though 4 was more calligraphy with cartoonish exaggerations).

DOA being anime is not inherently a bad thing either, because without the exaggeration of it's fantasy then it wouldn't be DOA. It all stems to fantasy one way or another.

The moment a ninja teleports, I already know that's anime-as-heck. It just happens to be an anime with a realistic look that has the anime power fantasy. Heck Jann Lee kicked a dinosaur, that's pretty anime/fantasy to me lol.
DOA series turned 29 today. Next year is the big 30.

Btw, still astounds me how I can get DOA++ emulation to work so well but I can't with the original DOA, lol (it works, but its slower and has choppy sound). If emulation experts can't get the original DOA to run well and KT/TN won't or can't rerelease the original game in some form then I fear outside of getting a DOA arcade machine (for as long as they're able to last) they'll never be preserved properly.

@inochinagi I got the original DOA running. You need to find and download the Model 2 emulator.

and it runs well? Thanks, I'll look into that then.

edit: looks like Ive tried it a while back but I couldnt get it to boot up even, maybe had the wrong DOA1 romset or lacked the right bios

edit 2: just found the right romset :D it works now

DOA4 was the boldest in terms of design, DOA5 was the best competitively, DOA6 lost its identity trying to please everyone (and making Nico, Honoka, and Marie Rose story driven characters. IMO they made story mode so unserious).

Something to be said for DOA 3 though. Simplified movelists and controls with extremely fast movement speed and large stages. It was unintendedly good once you understood how it was played, particularly with 3.1/3.2. And nothing in the series has really come close to its dark tone and palette, with perhaps the original DOA 2 being a runner up.

I've always thought that 3.1/3.2 was considered the best competitively.
DOA4 was the most ambitious presentation-wise and gameplay-wise, or boldest like you said.
DOA5 was the most successful in terms of pleasing everyone (competitively and otherwise).
DOA6 was the worst in terms of pleasing anyone.
still mind blown how MK1 just fizzled out on such a weak note, and I think it's a much better game than it's predecessor MK11, but popular opinion seems to think otherwise :/
Akira was the best character throughout DOA5, prove me wrong?

Not even just PP. Even throws contributed since majority is not breakable.

One 64T into a combo because someone stepped one time (assuming the player predicted the step) and you can't break the throw in DOA terms does provide decent hints that Akira isn't as disadvantage as people made it out to be from linearity.

Oh I was referring to Hayate in DOA5LR. Do I agree with Japan in that he was the best character in all of DOA5? Maybe but I also haven't played DOA5LR in a while. I know for certain he had a lot of amazing tools. 4P being one of them. Move was so good, they had to nerf it in DOA6. Agree with what DB said bout Akira.

Yeah, I wish Akira got more respect. He was definitely overshadowed by the likes of Helena, Christie, Gen Fu (and Ninja's).
didn't think I'd get so into the horse girl game but here I am, playing the game daily and even watching the anime, guess i'm an unironic uma musume fan now

the horse waifu propaganda worked on me and i'm not proud ;(

Pfft, get back to me about your pride if somehow you one day find that your horse waifu is actually more horse than waifu.... X_X'

The people calling Clair Obsur over-rated that watched a few youtube clips, and have personally never played it themselves.
Chat, I still haven't played Project X Zone. Is now the time?

Time is whenever, I've pre order this game years ago. Had a blast playing Project X Zone 1 & 2 (I missed out 2nd Game Pre Order Bonus Level that is based on Namco X Capcom, because I've spent $404 on DOAX3 Saikyou Edition at that time).

This makes me want to get it on citra now, I remember i loved playing the demo in high school but I never got around to buying it xD those images just scream perfection tho since they all align so perfectly!

I have both games. I love the first one and beat it. The second game, however, was a bit overwhelming and I got stuck on the chapter where the enemies ambush the ship and there were time requirements.
Random, but Tekken 8 is on sale. Figured I give a heads up for those looking forward to Miary Zo character upcoming.

I don't have T8 but figured for heads up.

I'd be leaping for joy if you were talking about the Tekken 8 vinyl album soundtrack.

Alas, that's not the case.
What if I told you... I know stuff for the next DOA.

Stuff that I was secretly told to keep to myself...
Hot take. Not every RPG has to be open world and that some RPGs like Vesperia or even FF7 for the PS1, had something called an "Overworld" and was arguably a good formula that should stay / come back to at some point. Especially for JRPGs.

I'm good with overworld traversal being open world as long as faster travel & warping is added over time & some hidden goodies are sprinkled in here & there, just like in classic JRPGs with overworlds. But old school overworlds also shouldnt go the way of the dodo, especially by smaller budget or indie games... imo, we also shouldn't let prerendered backgrounds die out just like 8bit didn't die out.
DestructionBomb

I think it depends if it holds up or not. Like if the system was built upon it, the sacrifices isn't as severe. Open world these days get too ambitious and sometimes loses quality to fill a pseudo immersion when you have areas with open fields with nothing in it.
