Community Poll Game: Characters enjoyability

I have a more clear-cut opinion on my gameplay .
Either i enjoy playing a character or i dislike it completely. if they not fall into these 2 categories, i put them on the neutral.
it's black or white. The more i play the closer it will look like "between light grey and dark grey. "
That's surely because i'm pretty new on the game.

Akira - 1 - i already use the girl version of ba ji quan, though i really like DBomb or Sly Akira vids . My Akira is boring
Alpha – 1- I stay away from her otherwise I would be tempted to spam ppppppp ad libs
Ayane - 3
Bass - 1 - i like his reverence's Bass. but i don't like my Bass
Bayman - 1 - He scares me too much. He’s too rude.
Brad Wong - 3
Christie – 5 well it could have been 1 like alpha (i spam) but i really like her i don't know why.
Ein - 3
Eliot - 3
Gen Fu - 3
Hayabusa - 3
Hayate - 3
Helena - 5 - personified goddess. I also like her mixup completely opposite from my loved character
Hitomi - 3
Jacky - 1
Jann Lee – 1 Jacky an Jann Lee are 2 faces of the same coin for me. Too rough for me
Kasumi - 3
Kokoro – 5 Simply The best. I don't mind that she’s not popular
Leifang - 3
Leon – 1 same as bayman
Lisa - 3
Marie - 3
Mila - 3
Momiji – 5 she was 3 before I tried to main her
Pai – 3 I would like to play her like Timasty. Mine is so boring
Rachel - 3
Rig – 1 I don’t like him , can’t give a reason.
Sarah - 3
Tina – 4 the only 4 from this list, because she could be my next main as I want to try a grappler.
Zack – 1, i don't care

For Grappling, there are three basic criteria which would constitute a 'grappler'. The grappler can have any number of the criteria, but must at least have one.

  • The character's neutral throw has a start-up of 4 frames
  • The character has an air throw
  • The character has ground throws

I don't recall which characters in DOA5 have a 4 frame startup.

Bass meets all three criteria: He has neutral 4 frame throw, has multiple air throws, and has ground throws.
Bayman has ground throws.
Leon has air throw and ground throws
Tina has air throw(s) and ground throws
Mila has ground throws
Lisa has air throw
Hayabusa has air throw

Don't forget that Brad Wong, Gen Fu and Rachel also have air throws.

Phase 4 also has an air throw, iirc, and Nytontengu has both an air and ground throw.

reading your posts, i'm less confident to make a view on grapplers vs striker.
The title of the chart will put people into an useless bloody fight.

Should iterate that that is my personal criteria, not that it has to be universal to everyone.

Keeping in mind I'm not familiar with the technical side, what does that first criteria matter to being a grappler? It seems like needing the others to me. Otherwise its just "has a grab" isn't it?

It means characters with 4 frame throws can throw punish moves that other characters can't. 4 frame throws can be used to throw moves that are -5 on block/hit without the opponent having a chance to attack to interrupt the throw. Other characters with 5 frame throws can only punish -6 moves and not -5 moves because their throw is too slow.

This all leads to characters with 4f throws being able to use throws more often than others for guaranteed damage.

It was much easier back in the DOA2/DOA3 days. Each 'tiered throw' was 1 frame slower than the previous, and anyone who had 1 frame faster throw than that same tier was considered a grappler.

At the time it was Bass, Bayman, Leon, Leifang, and Tina.

The tiers were

Neutral Throw
Single-direction Throw
Multi-direction Throw

Strikers had a Neutral Throw startup of 5 frames;
Single-direction Throw startup of 6 frames;
Multi-direction Throw startup of 7 frames;

Grapplers had 4, 5, and 6 startup frames respectively.

Much more simple, and the system change to have throw ranges from 4-12 'mucked' things up due to the larger capable range. Now you have a variety of mixed speeds between characters.

even though it's a bad idea to classify characters between grapplers / strikers, when i look at some votes (for example dontforkwitme) it seems that people has a tendancy to vote for characters that share something in common.

For instance, people who like Leon/Bass/Bayman/Rachel, often give bad votes for MR, Kasumi, Christie, Kokoro and vice-versa (Ok there are exception)

Yeah, like I said in my OP, I tend to gravitate towards grapplers or grappler-like characters for several reasons.

One of the big ones is that I feel that with strikers I'm required to hit too many buttons. It just feels sloppy and reckless to me, personally, whereas having slower, single-strikes feels like each movement is in a direct response the the opponent's current situation. If not properly selected, you get blown up. If properly selected, you reap a good reward.

High-risk, high-reward. That's generally the approach that suits me best.

I like reset throws and I like big damage. Mostly reset throws, though. I love reset throws. Preferably no reliance on stances, too.

For the 5's, I really like these characters and as you can see, they are all very diverse in play styles. I can either be offensive or defensive with these characters and they're pretty easy to play, for me at least. The 4's are characters I really do enjoy using, but I feel kind of restricted in how I can play them, because they all have specific strengths to their game. Still, they're pretty easy for me to use as well, but I still feel as though I have to work a bit harder for these wins with said characters. The 3's, I'm in the middle with. Most of the characters I've grouped here are fairly moderately easy to use, in that, you can abuse their cheap stuff and win a match. However, these groups of characters, for me at least, are characters that need to be mastered in order to unleash their full potential in battle. The 2's are characters I've tried to learn, mainly because I like how the pros play them (especially Helena). Still, I don't quite mesh with these characters, especially since all but one are very technical to say the least. As for the 1's, these characters and their fighting styles just don't appeal to me. Most of them are hard hitters, except for one, but a lot of them are grapplers. I have a hard time using and fighting grapplers, so I don't really care for them, except for Tina. Also, Jann Lee and Jacky may have the style fighting style, but I prefer Jacky's style to Jann Lee.

So yeah, overall, I guess I like characters where I can be defensive or offensive with depending on the situation. But I also like characters that are usually either really easy to use, but hard to win with OR that are really hard to use, but has a few cheap tools that can mean easy victory.
