DOA6 Graphics Thread

This is why I liked Tag Mode option in Watch Mode for DOA 3 and DOA Ultimate. You would get cool looking cinematic shots of the characters jumping in from high up in slow motion. The girls looked great and with photo mode you or video mode it would be awesome to record these shots! Please Team Ninja! Please bring it back!!

I almost didn't touch photo mode. Does it implement depth of field and anti-aliasing?

There are three camera options, centered on either fighter one or two or centered right in the middle of them. You can rotate the camera, tilt it, zoom in and out and there are some very basic lens focus options. That's it basically. About antialiasing I am honestly not sure. I think it is doing something, because the image appears less aliased than during a fight.

Let's have a Rig face model appreciation post:

He has such a handsome face. And it's not the generic handsome of the more or less featureless Eliot or Hayate, but it has its flaws. It's a bit wide, a bit rugged, a bit asymmetric and overall distinctive. As a character artist myself I can tell you this kind of ridgewalk is not easy. He also seems to be racially ambiguous, which makes it even more interesting. Whoever did his face model, already back in DOA5, did great work. Especially since it has become so common to just scan faces of models to put them in games. At least I don't think any of the faces that were made for DOA5 were scanned.

Honestly, looking at Marie and Honoka's faces, I don't think they really have the same face syndrome anymore... or atleast not as obvious.

I think they did a good enough job differentiating them that it's no longer the problem in DOA5 that many talked about.
But yeah, I've been seeing they've been touching the faces of alot of characters outside of Hayate who seems to be the main one who looks the most off.

I'm so mad about TN (wait, I forget much of the character art was outsourced) completely messing up Hayate's hair. It looks really terrible, low resolution, texture warping, no proper transparency and a weird pixelation pattern that can only be some kind of graphical error. For that reason I can't use him in any photos. :(

I liked what they did with his face though, like adding some wrinkles between his brows and on his nose bridge. Here you can see the wrinkles, and the weird pixelation on the hair (it is not dirt texture):

It's due Honoka, as asian character, this time has more asian facial features (same with Kasumi, Ayane, Leifang, Kokoro and Nyotengu).

In general I like what they did with with this characterization, they also nailed skin tones and hairs colours from old games in comparison with DOA 5 that was ... really imprecise in most cases.

I feel her head rounder and a bit less lengthen than in DOA 5. I also think her nose is a bit smaller.

People are always so easily fooled by different lighting/shading. The DOA5 lighting has more gradiants and more depth to it, the DOA6 lighting leads to overexposure, flattening everthing. For that reason Honoka's face appears flatter, rounder and wider.

Here I adjusted just the shading (not any shapes) of the DOA6 image to match it more to the DOA5 shading:

There, the DOA6 face looks already much slimmer and the nose wider.

The only actual shape differences in these pictures are the eyes and the mouth. That's because Honoka looks up in the DOA6 image which makes her eyes appear bigger (her bottom lashes are also darker having the same effect, old makeup trick), and she also smiles which widens her mouth.

And none of that makes her look more Asian.

I don't even know why I make my arguments anymore, I made every argument at least 5 times in here already. =__= I have way too much time...
To be fair you're probably the best qualified and most passionate person to make arguements on the graphical errors in the franchise. Not that no one else cares but you're sort of like the Goku of graphics on the forum.

The only thing I ever said is that Marie and Honoka don't seem to share the same face syndrome problem anymore and that seems to be the case. Of course you can say they share the same face template with NiCO as well... but I can also say that for practically every character since most artists go with everyone having the same base model and work further with the meshes after that.

I was mainly answering the "characters look more Asian" statement. They really don't. They might have made some minor model changes (Kasumi actually seems to have a smaller, rounder chin area), but that doesn't make her look more Asian. That just makes her look cuter and younger. That seems to be the main objective of DOA designers/artists in regards to the girls, cute anime doll faces, not more Asian or more realistical/natural faces.

@Shinjuku and I had a good discussion about that topic in this very thread a while ago. Maybe he wants to chime in, since he made some cool image edits that actually made the characters look more Asian.

In regards to Honoka's and Marie's faces:
They do have slightly different face models, they already had those in DOA5. Nico also has a slightly different face model. The differences are however so minor, to still fit that cute anime loli template, that the running gag of Marie in differently colored wigs is still fair game. ;)
I noticed too that Honoka looks different in some of my shots, different from Marie and different from her usual self. For example in this particular shot:

So long and slim. I of course notice that when I do do my photo sessions, waiting for the exact right pose, angle and lighting, I am very particular about that, lol. And for that reason I can tell you it is all about the lighting, especially in The Muscle stage, which has very bright lighting with stark shadows (I actually toned it a bit down afterwards). This can change a face's appearance fundamentally:

So you think it's primarily shadow that does it? I think the facial animations also help them look different at times too as well.

I'm just saying from how I see it that they don't look sameface as much but you are the boss.

when people say something looks "asian" they're referring to those (real life, breathing, conventionally attractive) asians that were either born with or manipulated themselves in various ways to have those cute, soft, young, doll-like features. A = C, B = C, A = B. similar to the [young means l*li] meme, you just know what the user is talking about ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
