I can understand how someone could think that it's a bit much. But, as someone who has seen a lot of Japanese media in his time, Japanese Helena sounds rather...plain. The French accent adds something that wasn't really there before. Same with the other accented characters. Even if the accents aren't 100% exact. It just adds variances to the sound of everything.
Okay, but Hideyuki Hori is the most awesome Hayabusa ever, right?

Yuka Koyama's voice... Plain for Japanese Helena? I think her voice is in the level of mature lady elegance most want her to sound like that most wouldn't mind her having an accent or not.

Sure the Japanese voices don't usually add accents (except for Tina and Bass since they obviously speak Engrish in Japanese) but I doubt you could find a Japanese VA spurting out French words and sound elegant at the same time.

Yeah I have to agree with the Japanese Helena sounding rather plain, at least the spoken lines, but she sounds alright mid fight.
Alternatively, I feel the exact opposite concerning her english dub. Spoken lines are perfect for her, but her Byaaaah sounds make her sound goofy as hell.

I think it's probably because of the portrayal direction that she had for 5/5U. In 2U-4, Koyama's portrayal for Helena sounded rather fierce and angrier as oppose to 5/5U where Helena sounded calmer.

I kinda agree with you for Strassman's case. The "Byaah" sounded off but her KO scream sounded alright.

I mean, he's had the job forever so it's kind of hard to measure up.

But, now that you bring up Hayabusa, I think that they really translated his lines strangely for this game. I don't think anyone can say "There's no way in hell I'm getting on that helicopter" and have it sound Hayabusa-y.

I'm not saying she delivered her lines badly or she doesn't fit or anything. But...aside from her use of "kashira" and wa" and the end for super femininity purposes...she just is. Not bad by any means, but the frequency of which I've heard someone like Helena's character in Japanese far outnumbers the amount of times I've heard a character with a French accent in much of anything. Also, English lends itself better to varying accents than Japanese does (outside of things like Kansai dialect). It's hard to do any "accent" in Japanese without it sounding reeeeeally goofy.

And, I think something is wrong with the timing of some of Helena's yells in English. It's kind of jarring and I'm kind of angry it wasn't fixed in the Ultimate update.

Yeah, some of his lines just seem... off.

Speaking of Hayabusa's lines, sometimes he'll say something when he lands a HiC punch hold. In 5U it works with a mid punch hold, and I know in the old games it would work with Izuna holds. It's something along the lines of "sekiori," and he says it right as the hold connects. Any idea what that means?

Also, at 0:06 in this video. Always been curious what that was.

Not to whore out your Japanese skills or anything. I understand if you've got better stuff to do. :p

OR they could take out the non-canon characters and replace them with NEW characters with NEW & UNIQUE fighting styles.

My Japanese is actually not fantastic or anything. Just to put the truth out there for anyone who's thinking I'm fluent or something. But, I know enough about the language, grammar, and the phonics to look up what I don't know. I'm still willing to help out where I can.

I haven't turned on the game, but I can guess that he's saying "tsuki ari". It's kind of a fencing/kendo term for an opening to attack or thrust. It's used in many other games as well. If I remember correctly, they translated it in English as "You're wide open!", giving some credence to my idea.

You'll have to give me a bit on the second one. I know what line you're talking about so I can search for it on my own, but I can't hear it clearly enough in that video to know straight away.

EDIT: Okay, I'm back from plugging in my PS2. Brute, No wonder I didn't get it at first. It's one of them weird ninja-y things that no one actually says. My best guess is "Tsuketachiita ze!" which is kind of like, "I've come to interfere!"

Well, compared to my Japanese, you're godly.
Kinda like how there was always that ONE kid in German class everyone would go to for help on their homework.

I can agree there may not be a lot of characters heard in English who was voiced by someone with a French accent (most cases, it tends to be a character portrayed rich and posh) but do you mean to say someone who voices characters similar to Helena in Japanese is common? I thought someone who voices Leifang, Hitomi or Marie Rose is more prominent and common.

No problem. It's not like I had to fish my PS2 out of a closet or anything. Plus it gave me a chance to replay DOA2 and Bloody Roar 4 right quick. Dem PS2 grafix. It's funny to hear people complain about graphics now. And everyone had so few moves. Ryu was completely different.

(And dear lord, BR4 is broken...)

Well, yes. It's definitely a thing. The posh characters that you mentioned. Maybe not Helena's exact voice, but her manner of speaking.

I had always thought it's the opposite. I thought it was rarer to hear Japanese VAs speaking in Helena's manner as oppose to Japanese VAs portraying the more naive and youthful girls.

Well, sure. There are more kawaii-anime-school-girls that exist, but that doesn't make the other types of characters completely non-existent.

I mean...people usually have eyebrows more often than not. Reminds me of that image with the famous people with their eyebrows removed. Cannot unsee. Total do not want territory. You know not what horrors you unleash, mortal.
Have you seen the Zack from previous games? That's what I mean.
