Reading an your old post, I had overlooked that you asked even who was the character more important for VF in addition to the more popular. From the firstv pov, that should be definitely Kage-Maru.
Contrarily to what could be thought, from the story events he appear be the real main character of the VF plot (and not Akira that instead is the series' posterboy).
