DOA6 New Venus Character Could Skyrocket DOA6 Player Base

Before Dead or Alive 6 was released, Team NINJA seemed pretty confident when they stated that a Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation character would not make an appearance in the 3D fighter, but with the rising success of Venus Vacation it comes as no surprise that our favorite developer would recant their statements in favor of expanding their DOA6 player base to a new audience this March. This surprise character is a part of the Season 4 Pass, and can be purchased in several different skews if the SPs are not your forte. With this story we explore why Team NINJA recanted their official statements that could result in being one of their biggest & best business decisions in years for the fighting series.

Contrary to popular belief, Team NINJA has definitely toned the sexual nature down as they have promised for the 3D fighter. Rachel's Fiend skin was controversially censored, there is an option to censor select oufits, and even their offering of bikinis are not nearly as revealing as they were in Dead or Alive 5. The Venus Vacation character will not necessarily bring back Dead or Alive to the skimpy standards fighters were accustomed to, and not everyone plays Venus Vacation because it is a game with revealing outfits, but because they enjoy the dialogue between characters and the different level of experiences they can have with their favorites whether it be in a casino or volleyball court.

Never in a million years would a fighter from this community believed that the Xtreme series would surpass the fighter's popularity, but it has; and the Steam charts show this emphatically. Is it because Dead or Alive 6 is not currently the game fighters want, or was it inevitable based off the accessibility & marketing appeal from DOAX:VV?

According to Steam charts, DOA6 has 147 current players with 151 on a 30-day average, and the game continues to decline in numbers by about 3% each month. While those numbers are not great, Venus Vacation is currently boasting 602 active players right now with 1,840 on a 30-day average which is a 10% gain from thirty days ago.

Keep in mind this is only accounting the Steam version released 10 months ago that has limited characters and is still evolving. The complete game is much higher, with the combined sales of DOAX3 and DOAX3: Scarlet.

While at this point you could say "This sounds like a slam dunk for Team NINJA!" believe it or not there are still plenty of things that could go wrong. Honoka was released in Dead or Alive 5: Last Round to appeal to the same audience of Marie Rose, while Raidou was released to appeal the players that wanted another male character. This was predicted to be a hype release duo, but the only thing that wasn't flat about Honoka was her knockers, and Raidou had ZERO effect in the offline tournament scene.

The new Venus Vacation character MUST be more fun and play better than copycat Honoka & low-tier Marie Rose, and unlike DOA5:LR there will be no male counterpart alongside her release, which is a damn shame for a community that demands the return of DOA's strongest man; Leon. It's without question that it will be critical for Team NINJA to release a BLOODY BRILLIANT version update alongside this character to reduce the anger and frustration some will feel in their wait for a more masculine character selection.

While there are other demands on the DOA6 community wish-list, stages seems to be the second, or maybe most important inclusion of all. The stage selections have been a royal pain in the ass for players at tournaments and are only beginning to get better, and unless it's Dead or Alive 4's 'Seaside Market' another beach level will not help DOA6 spice up its sense of atmosphere and location. Team NINJA should be prioritizing classic favorites & new stages to keep DOA6 fresh with the regular character releases.

Not everyone is excited about this release, and for good reason, they said they weren't going to do it. But this decision could be met with a compromise if our needs as players are met and we continue to see encouragement, support and content we want from Team NINJA going (hopefully) into our second season of fighting entertainment.

And I wasn't desperate tbh, I didn't even know who Kayane really was at that time.

Yeah, but the Kayane thing was the final straw for me because I didn't expect people here to be like that. It was so embarrassing to see. People here are still awesome though. I just understand the hater's POV more.

I see you bringing up this Kayane thing a lot and it seems to be something in particular that has really affected you, but while I've only just started actively posting here, I've been signed up to this site since 2013 and lurked on-and-off but especially since before DoA6 released... and I've done a search of her name just now... and I have no idea what you could be referring to. I haven't seen anyone say anything paricularly cringeworthy in regards to her around here (thankfully), not even from @KasumiLover in particular, and definitely not from multiple people. So what are you talking about?

I played DOA5 for it's entire life, tried to get people into DOA5 since it came out, and pointed people to the DOA resources like this place and the Did you know series Master made. Unless that doesn't count because I'm not going to tournaments or making content.

Exactly this. Everyone knows anime games has issues but the mechanics and other elements are still good enough to draw people in. BB and GG both have a shit load of issues and Under night too, but those games are still good even with their flaws. SC has issues but it still manages to draws people in. Now look at DOA6 and how it's issues affected it's player base and the public. Its so bad that top players left the game. You don't see that in the other games.

If SKD or Kizzie or Omito, or Redblade or any other top anime players left their game en masse then something clearly is wrong with the game.

The issue with that is that the "people" in this case refers to the people in the FGC. If the majority of them don't like DOA's mechanics and people here don't want any change then the outcome is obvious. And of course reputation matters. EVO is a business and the vast majority of the people who take part in EVO also don't care about DOA. There's no reason for DOA to be there because it has no impact to the event. In this case DOA has to listen to them to some degree. And they aren't even asking for insane stuff.

You're confused. Losing respect does not mean you guys are assholes. I'll break it down for you. How is this community suppose to be taken seriously or respected when something like Nico generates more outrage than the DLCs? You know, the DLCs that make people not respect DOA or it's community in the first place. You guys keep going on about needing to look good to other people but you guys are the ones accepting the things that make the community look bad. And if you didn't know, people outside of here don't respect this community. Look at the recent articles about the DLCs and how people are excited about it or whatever. It just further supports the "DOA is not a serious fighter" mindset. Other than that I don't care what you think of me. I'm just telling you guys what other people think about DOA.

I know. I'm just saying don't expect people to suddenly change and accept DOA when DOA is the one not changing.

I don't expect it to tho xD no matter what doa does tho people are gonna already have a bandwagon opinion about it. TN literally tried to go esports and cover up Kasumi and Helena and make the game seem more brutal but Aris and lots of other people still had the same thought so the stigma won't ever change

No offense, but why should the "community" care if you "lose" respect in them? It doesn't change anything because you're approaching the situation from completely the wrong perspective. A lot of DOA players do want change in DOA6. I mean, who the fuck actually likes the ground game or the limited bound combo possibilities for instance? People ask for throw breaks, and better okizeme all the time. I personally hate raw break blows (i12 parry along with +4 on block is pretty silly compared to the other 3D fighters).

People thinking that 'the individuals that support DOA6 are 100% happy with its disposition' need to get it out of their head that just because people support DOA doesn't mean that they are 100% ok with any legit bullshit. It's mostly a case that the people that support DOA6 realise that, if you don't support DOA6, then you're contributing to DOA basically dying altogether. Yeah it's a shitty situation, but if everyone up and dropped DOA6 tomorrow, the game, and possibly the franchise would die. What I'm getting at is, that people have to develop some grit and struggle through the tough times (or you can quit outright, but that also requires fucking off, which admittedly can be hard for some people). You need to make do with what you have sometimes. Remember that.

The issue about your contributions is that you're undermining them by bitching and moaning about "all that's wrong with DOA6". Yes, DOA6 has a lot of shit wrong with it, people get that, they're not idiots. But it's not healthy or productive to focus on the negative all the time. With regards to tournament representation or whatnot, the game mechanics are not as big of an issue that you're making it out to be. Hell, people play, and watch NRS games all the time haha. Mechanically, DOA6 is still reasonably solid. Watching XcaliburBladez or Hoodless play, for instance, never gets old because they demonstrate some of the true depth of DOA6. The issue comes from the community focusing on being toxic too often over actually being productive and attracting more potential suitors to DOA in general. Do you think I talk shit about DOA6 at my locals? I will state legit criticisms, but I NEVER make DOA6 look bad to them. Why would anyone want to play a game with a community that focuses on being toxic?

Your comments with regards to Kayane are also horribly off-base and incredibly misleading. No one was fucking gushing over Kayane playing DOA6. Anyone that thought that was missing the point. Kayane is a pretty big figure in the 3D fighter space. People know who she is. People like Kayane can attract more attention to your game by playing it competitively (which Kayane did at at least a couple European DOA6WC tournaments). The reason why it was cool to see Kayane play DOA6 is because she does have a bit of history with the franchise, isn't exactly "Random Streamer Girl #15378", and in general has the potential to generate some positive interest. It would make no sense for the DOA community to ignore Kayane playing DOA6.

Think real hard if you want to keep following DOA6 or not. If you want to, try to approach the situation with a more positive mindset. If you don't, then the healthiest thing is to quit the game, and return when you feel like supporting the game. I'm being blunt, but seriously, it's not healthy to want to vent so much.

*On a side note, also keep in mind that majority of the individuals that like DOA6's DLC are Asian (as in from Asia, not NA or EU) casual players.

If DOA had broken mechanics, sure I’d understand they want change. But if people complain about DOA having a hold system while the hold system exists for 20+ years, they shouldn’t complain. If you don’t like something, change it. If you cannot change it, change your attitude. DOA and it’s mechanics are EVO worthy, it’s mostly the reputation DOA has that makes DOA get shafted from the lineup.

So people can’t be excited for the DLC costumes then? NiCO got more outrage because it’s another little girl. People care less about the DLC costumes because they play for the characters, not for the DLC costumes. After Honoka’s release the DOAX apocalypse came and pumped out little girl after little girl with the exception of Tamaki, Sayuri and Nagisa. After seeing those girls many people including me, were worried about the direction DOA is going into with it’s character designs. I can’t blame them for getting angry.

I fail to see how those DLC costumes make DOA less of a fighter... DLC costumes are just fanservice. Something every fighting game has. People have issues with the overpriced seasonpasses that contain nothing but costumes. The DOA community shouldn’t be like other fighting game communities. Especially not like the MortalKombat community. Also, you don’t have to tell me what other people think of DOA, if I want to know what those people think about DOA, I’d ask them and explain the misunderstandings surrounding their opinions on DOA. And good! You shouldn’t care what I think of you, because I don’t think of you. At all.

@Onryoki - I can't just give your post a star. That's a 5 star post.
Thank you so much ❤️

It STILL continues to anger me that they keep adding in new characters to XVV rather than bringing back the girls who got excluded last time* but seeing how the story for 6 implies that the DOAX games save the first one aren't canon, I take some comfort knowing that those girls are not canonical/official characters.

At least with Momiji and Rachel, who tend to be disregarded as DOA girls due to being from Ninja Gaiden, are still considered canon since they're part of the shared universe.

I'm hoping this new girl will just be considered an non-canon character with no real backstory connecting her to the main story and game.

*and I wouldn't be surprised if NiCO got in before Tina

@P2p1mbs - the DoAX series is purely a popularity contest and has totally lost the identity it began with. I'm a fan who enjoyed both sides of the series with with DoA1 - DoA4 alongside DoAX and DoAX2, but since that stupid Japanese poll where Tina and Christie didn't make the cut and Lisa came dead last I wouldn't care if DoAX dies (lol, no chance of that anymore), and it's not just because my favorite characters aren't in it. It's nothing but a soulless, cashgrab, waifu simulator now. I wouldn't be surprised if that poll is why Lisa got bleached, nearly killed, and lost half her identity in the main game. They were probably gonna leave her dead but there must have been some outcry or nudge from somewhere to keep her in, so I'm at least thankful for that.

What the hell is this thread? Lol

It’s a discussion about how the XVV girl will save DOA. It’s a lot of responsibility, but someone’s got to do it.

That's what the subject of the thread was supposed to be but the discussion moved away from that back on page 1, lol. It became another discussion about the current state of DoA, TN/KT, the community, and what we should do.

...are you talking about the DOAX3 character poll? That poll got made AFTER that all happened with Lisa; her redesign and near death happened around 2012, the poll was around 2015, it had nothing to do with how she got treated in DOA5.

They shouldn't but I'm just pointing out that if I can see it then others can see it too. People make fun of every little thing DOA and it's community does. Imagine if people who don't care about DOA or already hate the DLC and whatnot see the conversations about the DLCs here. Imagine them seeing you guys discuss Nico and whatever else. People make fun of this place for things like that and then what do you guys do? The exact thing they make fun of you for. See my point?

I'm talking about the image this place and DOA has. Think about it. A newcomer comes to this place, the "serious" fighting side of DOA, after hearing what everyone says about DOA6 and what do they see? The things they were told.
With regards to tournament representation or whatnot, the game mechanics are not as big of an issue that you're making it out to be. Hell, people play, and watch NRS games all the time haha. Mechanically, DOA6 is still reasonably solid.
So the things people explicitly state as the reason why they don't like DOA is not true and it has to be something else? Even though they themself said it? I'll just concede here if non DOA players' words are wrong and not considered because a DOA player says so.

  • Other people don't like holds and the amount of times you can throw them out-> That's just how DOA is. If they don't like it then don't play it.
  • Other people hate the DLCs and think less of DOA because it-> It's not an issue because x,y, and z and because I can find a reason to accept it others should too.
And DOA doesn't need to do anything but it's the other people that need to change for DOA? Like EVO and and everyone else? If you believe that then you do you.

I'll simplify it.
DOA players and DLC: You guys may not like it much but it's fine.
DOA players and Nico: Everyone goes insane coming up with all these random things as to why she is the worst thing in DOA.
Other people and DLC: They absolutely hate it and is a major reason they don't like DOA.
Other people and Nico: They don't care because it's the usual DOA.

If you guys did the reverse it would have made the community look a bit more serious. Or at least have the same amount of outrage. But, it's flipped and you guys being fine with the DLC is one of the thing people use as a reason to not take this place seriously. It doesn't matter what you see when we're talking about how other people see DOA. Think about DOA's image then consider this; What hurts DOA more? Nico or the DLC? People were shitting on DOA characters way before Marie so I find it really hard to believe the "anime" characters were ever going to hurt DOA as much as the DLCs did. DOA characters were never amazing icons everyone praised. Nico is just another added to the bunch.

Its just baffling how you guys keep going on and on about wanting to be more well received and recognized but also constantly saying things like it's the other people's fault and they should like DOA for what it is. DOA, TN, and whoever else in charge has done nothing to make people believe in DOA.

@human013 for the record

Me and DLC : It's not fine. I hate the way it's going but I have bigger concerns, but I'll keep playing
Me and Nico: She's not the worst thing about DoA6 ...MR still is

...are you talking about the DOAX3 character poll? That poll got made AFTER that all happened with Lisa; her redesign and near death happened around 2012, the poll was around 2015, it had nothing to do with how she got treated in DOA5.

ah damn, you're right of course, sorry, seems time and history are becoming a jumble in my mind, so that assumption about how Lisa's been treated in the main game was off base I admit, but I maintain the rest of what I said in regards to that poll

Just to make some things clear:

- Stop antagonizing the users of FSD or the DOA community because you're in no position to be judgmental of anyone else in the community because quite frankly your attitude is part of the problem and is just making things worse. Which is quite ironic considering your tirades.

- Who specifically are you talking about in your rants? Who's making fun of DOA? You're coming off as extremely off-base on your judgments. Your having a mentality of: "If everyone and their pet dog aren't moaning about DOA6's issues incessantly, then they're obviously fine with them."

- You do realise that your ranting to the people of FSD does absolutely nothing to improve DOA's disposition right?

- Tell me, how would you improve the DOA community to increase interest in DOA6 or DOA in general?

Low tier thread could skyrocket FSD posting activity

In truth, it's only the same exact members. Won't bring new people into this site. An enhanced amount of shitposting in this thread is simply just shitposting realistically. Unfortunately nothing notable is succeeding regarding it.

Also for all that is holy people, ignore human013. He knows there are better fighting game options out there so just leave it at that, that dude is also shitposting.
