Graphical Changes

How do you design an arcade stick¿ I've never seen anyone do that.

Not designing the stick itself, but the artwork that is on it.

The Q4NBA stick comes with a free plexi glass that allows you to put any artwork you like under it (which sure as hell saves a lot of hassle).

I did a rough design and I'm just waiting to get all the character reveals to make a similar idea to the one I did for SF a few years back (you can see it in the arcade stick thread in the general discussion)

My editing skills have increased since then, and with the website background as a template (which also happens to be the DOA5 character select screen btw) It's looking pretty awesome :D

I might post a pic of the progress of the stick in the arcade stick thread :D .. The other guys did some pretty awesome designs for other sticks as well. you should check out that thread if you're interested. :)

Hey guys, The new direction for DOA 5 is awesome but there are some things that bug me (mostly related to Hitomi) so I thought I'd do some quick paintovers of some stuff, etc. and we can talk about the new graphical style of DOA 5.

Starting with Hitomi's infamous face. I picked the least flattering image I could find to paint over.
View attachment 100

Things I changed:
-Thinned out the neck and arms, they looked pretty wide to me.
-Made her ears stick out way less, she looked kind of like a monkey..
-Made her nose and mouth smaller with thinner lips.
-Changed her jawline to something less wide and more feminine.
-Gave her more hair to change her head shape, it was a little too thin before.
-Made her eyes more blue, I thought it just looked better and her favourite colour is Sky Blue apparently anyway.
-Minor tweaks here and there.

Higher res comparison:

Overall I tried to bring in some of DOA4's anime style roots into what they're doing now and make her look less like a chimp/little boy but it's only a start, it's not really well done.

What do you guys think should be fixed about the newer graphical style of DOA5?
I'm probably late but I never understood why people thought she was ugly in the beta, I found her cute and I thought her beta model was alot more ethnic and made her look more mixed European and Japanese, the fix you did to her erased her German traits and the fix the devs did I feel was OK but made her look too Japanese. Granted the devs changing her up was expected since the Japanese prefer girls more who look like them racially, which is why I think they overhauled her to look near full Japanese with only the eyes and hair being the main western traits

I also kinda dislike the chimp and monkey references to her pre doa5 vanilla appearance, I don't think there's anything wrong with bigger ears and a more prominent jawline. If she still looked like the pre doa5 Hitomi I think she would have had one of the most distinct and unique appearances out of the girls. Now in doa6 she's cute but her look isn't really memorable, I wish they would have kept her looking more European since Kokoro imo already filled the quota for a mixed race character who had European and Japanese roots but looked more asian

Interesting - I had no idea that Hitomi had a different face when DOA5 was being developed.
There are elements that like from both faces - I also don't mind the original ears or jawline. The only change that I'd say was absolutely necessary would be making her mouth/lips smaller, as I think it helped to make her face more proportional (making her nose just a wee bit smoother helped this too I think).

Thank you xD I know they lean more towards Japanese ideals with looks but they definitely could have kept Hitomi how she was, maybe just scaled her ears a bit since she looked more European before with the eyes being the way to see her Japanese side.

Oh, wow! I totally forgot about this story. I can only imagine if TN decided to attempt this again (and that's a BIG ass "if").

For the next DOA entry, would you prefer to get brand new models for the whole cast (started from scratch) in the manner of the DOA4 to DOA5 transition or to have the current models upgraded (like from DOA5 to DOA6)?

It would probably be new models made from scratch but based on DOA5/6 looks, like what they're did with the VV girls they put into Prism. I doubt they'd go way further into realism over style, and I hope they wouldn't.

i'm afraid what will DOA7 or reboot will look like if TN gave it to third party or just remake using UE5. it will look plain asf

I don't think so, I've seen how NG 2 black looks in the trailer and imo it looks really like nioh imo or something TN themselves made. I don't think they'll have to worry about looking plain since TN already has their own models that they can easily just bring over, tweak to their liking and just use the UE more as a base for its power and potential to enhance their already good visuals.

I don't think it's gonna look like any other game out, maybe MK1 but they use face models to make their characters look how they do and Tekken 8 JUST now started being able to make the characters look like they belong on current gen and I can't bring in SF6 since they're using their own engine. I think DOA7 on UE5 would look distinct as long as they keep the look they have in the NG game

I fear the best that they can do is another Tekken 8 clone because you can't upgrade UE5 unlike katana engine because UE5 belong to epic games.

Yeah but the visuals and how good the models look is up to the devs, that's why Tekken 7 looked bad and why soul calibur 6 looked like a remaster of soul calibur 5 since namco was lazy at the time and relied on reused assets and models and they had to keep the new characters on par with how the cast looked. Tekken 8 looks better now but mainly since Tekken had 9 years to play with UE4 and carry over that familiarity to tekken 8 which looks great

If DOA used Unreal, i feel like they'd use it more towards the environment and cloth physics since they wouldn't have to use their own pre made ones anymore, and they'd probably redo the actual models and such for the most part like they did for prism. It's just a matter of them not being lazy and going the mile to make the game stand out which wouldn't be much since NG2 black remaster looks like it could be a preview of what a new DOA could look like

UE sometimes gets slept on because UE has negative connotations for being an unoptimized mess with memes (rightfully so sometimes, Namco for example), but typically this also happens due to just developers behind it as well. Not everything is an Unreal Engine problem. This whole "you can't upgrade UE5 because of Epic Games -or insert any reasons for TN to not use it-" is probably made up and irrelevant since they just need time with it. They need to at least try it once before we toss it in the bin.

Also if you look it up, UE is also apparently one of the easiest to work with so they could build a foundation of having a much easier time to make a great looking game? who knows. If you really work with UE5 with competent devs and a budget it may actually turn out much better.

A perfect example of in-house engines not doing so hot in the late 2000s-2010s is Square Enix's Crystal Tools or Luminous. Not every in-house engine is some godlike secret recipe and i'm not sure why people have this magic boner of everything being in-house, with the engine of all things being one of them. If DOA7 looks like THAT instead of Katana engine then I'd rather see it under UE5 lol. It'll be the best looking fighter of all the games by a huge mile.

I wonder if Team Ninja could ever use Sega's Dragon Engine for the next DOA somehow, like VF6? I was just thinking it would have been so perfect if NG4 could have been done in an engine called the Dragon Engine, if not the Katana Engine.

RGG's Dragon Engine was my 2nd pick for DOA (or NG), while PG for NG.

Probably the only other good choice in my opinion.

IIB is how I want things to look in the future. Just a little bit more detail and fixing up of the hair.

Ayane’s band shouldn’t have clipping issues from behind. So it’s not perfect, but I largely like it.

if we get a DOA7
I'd rather have the "bland" UE5 look that KE style, Prism still suffers from a lot of awful quirks of the DOA6 engine (blinding white and awful contrast for starters. Where NG2B has literally none of those issues while actually looking like a current gen game, the biggest issues I see with Ng2B atm is where the hair is glitched and stuff like Ayane's bandanna have wrong/incomplete textures. *images from Mr. Ponton*
